Ive had a lot of problems with SATA since it was released. The fact is the connectors suck, although newer ones are better they can still have problems.
I wouldnt usually care too much but recently Ive lost two windows installs and a lot of lost work + wasted effort due to crashes.
I expect we would be better off using standard IDC connectors the same as old ATA cables, but 7 pin instead of 40. It does really annoy me that these POS connectors cost £5 each and more when the standard was new.
Recently I have had BSOD crashes several times a day, but its now fixed.
The design sucks becuase:
1) The pins have a bump near the end, its too near the edge and too small, does not match the width of slot minus connector width.
2) the slot in the connector is too big, allows too much wobble. Someone can fart other side of room and it will fall off.
3) On the inside opposide the pins, in the middle there is a bump designed to push the against the pins, but its wrong and useless.
These allow the connector to tilt, this makes 1) completely pointless, and ruins connection.
The newer connectors with metal clip, they only prevent wobble but the pins are the same and can still have bad *angled* connection.
So the way to fix this, firstly cut away the plastic bump from the inside of the connector so its flat. Then cut a thin peice of card about an inch long and wide as the slot, put it inside + fold over, so it sticks out from the top of the connector.
Sata is then fixed. Ive had no sata/disk related crashes since.
