View Full Version : Need a good quality 775 motherboard for my Pentium4 HT

I bought a while ago a Compaq Presario SR2163WM off some guy in college for $250. My laptop had just had a run-in with a leaky fishtank and guess who won. Anywho, I'm getting pretty fed up with this computer's motherboard. The CPU, RAM, etc are just fine (I grabbed a cheap MSI NX8500GT graphics card at the same time). The motherboard has some serious issues, but the volume out/mic in is seriously wacked out. Needless to say, it is time for something, anything, else.

To that end I checked out newegg and some great boards came up for good prices, especially around the $100-120 price point. If I could get a motheboard for $60-80, that is what I'm wanting to spend on the motherboard so I can get a Lian Li PC-A05NB. Getting a more expensive motherboard (even the 100-120 price point) would put me out of budget when adding the case since I need the motherboard now. So, in otherwords I can get a $80 motherboard AND the Lian Li case, OR only a 100-120 motherboard.

The kicker for all this is it needs to work with my processor. I have a Pentium 4 HT 3.0 Ghz processor so I know I have the socket right, but some of the boards don't explicitly list Pentium HT processors as supported even though they're the same socket. Am I correct that a my processor is referred to as Pentium4 HT and not Pentium D? I have two cores show up in Task Manager, but I know these are virtual (hence the HT, but doesn't Pentium D do the same?)

Here's a SS of my CPU-Z:

or link to verified info (http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=604303)

Now for the top contenders I saw on NewEgg. Feel free to comment on my picks, suggest your own, or recommend anything that might help my situation.

Foxconn ELA (P45 NBridge ICHR10R SBridge) (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813186153) - $70

MSI P45 Neo-F (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130181) - $77
GIGABYTE GA-P31-ES3G (P31 NBridge ICH7 SBridge) (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128356) - $60

GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3P (P45 NBridge ICHR10R SBridge) (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128358) - $115

GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3R (P45 NBridge ICHR10R SBridge) (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128359) - $100

If the Foxconn can get confirmed to work with my CPU, I would pick that one over all of them. If I could get confirmation which of these 4 boards would work with my specific CPU, that's be awesome!

Also, what do you guys think about grabbing a mATX board with onboard NVIDIA GPU and using their HybridSLI technology (or whatever it's called) to throw on my NX8500GT. In regards to mATX, I wouldn't like loosing the expansion stuff, but if there's better performance/price deals, I'd go for it.

I know the NVIDIA 9300 GPU has some heat issues, but I'm not overclocking or anything.

Thanks, I suppose Gigabyte will have info for the boards in this thread too. Wish Foxconn's website (http://www.foxconnchannel.com/Product/Motherboards/detail_spec.aspx?ID=en-us0000398) did though. Know anything about this specific Foxconn mobo?

Link for the foxcon support list :Foxconn ELA CPU support list (http://www.foxconnsupport.com/cpusupportlist.aspx?type=mb&socket=Socket%20775&model=ELA&cputype=Intel)

CPU is not listed there

All 3 Gigabyte motherboards support "Intel Pentium 4 631 Cedar Mill" which is my CPU. Now I'm just worried about my memory compatibility. Those charts aren't as easy to ready. Wonder how this Crucial Ballistix 2x2GB (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148212) memory would do...*goes to check*

edit: that link (like all the other mobo support links on Foxconn's site for this motherboard, don't go anywhere for me.

double edit: Crucial 1 GB memory is listed on Gigabyte's memory list under BL12864AA804. Googling that brings up a 1GB stick of Crucial Ballistix memory. While that isn't the 2GB stick I'd like to buy, it does bode well, right?

u dont want any NV parts on your MB, and especially not the NB/SB chipsets

NV = Nvidia? If so, is this a nothing will work/boot up compatibility issue or a personal preference/quality of experience issue?

Leeghoffd, since the CPU support list seems to work for you, could you check what the highest support that Foxconn mobo has for 775? In addition to that, does it support a Pentium E2140 Allendale 1.6 Ghz (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116037)?

Mucho Gracias!

*bump*
Added the MSI P45 Neo-F. Has beter specs on RAM and FSB, but not as good reviews on NewEgg. MSI's product site for the mobo (http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p_spec.asp?model=P45_Neo-F&class=mb) isn't working for me, so I can't check CPU & memory compatibility. I'd still go with Foxconn, assuming it supports the CPUs I need.

NV is nvidia and u dont want the chipsets they are all defective that u can buy now and they are being dropped from most OEMs from high rma numbers. its just a pain. IE my laptop has had 5 rmas and 4 new motherboards

All 21xx are supported on the ELA. I would buy a Giga P45 UD3 it supports all ya mentioned cpu's... no biggie, the ELA here costs an arm and a leg... for the MSI it seems they have withdrawn the mobo, can't find it on their lists in Europe

So the Foxconn ELA supports the Pentium E2140 Allendale 1.6 Ghz, but doesn't explicitly list the Intel Pentium 4 HT 631 Cedar Mill 3GHz. What are the chances it would support the lesser CPU?

Obviously, the Gigabyte P45 UD3 would be a better choice and the UD3P gains a x16 one one of it's PCIE slots and dual gigabit ethernet over the UD3R, for $15 more. I assume the P45 UD3s will support both CPUs. Both GA-EP45-UD3 boards support up to Core 2 Quad, so that could easily justify the $30-45 extra cost. If this is the case I might be able to scrounge up $30-45 more, but at this price point, that is more than 164% or 142% the cost of the Foxconn ELA. I guess if there's anyway to make buying one of the GA-EP45-UD3 boards possible, I should do so.

Look I have got this mobo running at the moment for a review, it costs 90 bucks at the Egg ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128372 ), does all the stuff I need till 500FSB with the E7400, E6300 and E8600, if you are not OC'ing like you told before, this is fine.

I would not take the risk to save 20 bucks and to be being obliged to buy another CPU if she won't boot.

Woa, didn't know there was an L version. Seems like it's perfect! All I'd loose is the additional x16 capability and dual gigabit ethernet over the P version and the ICH10R (instead of ICH10 - basically RAID stuff) over the R version. Saves me 10 over the R and 25 over the P. And it's only $20 more than the Foxconn ELA and obviously better.

Now I can get my case and motherboard! Thanks a lot for all the replies Leeghoofd! NewEgg is awesome, but together with XS it's amazing what can be done!
