Hi,

I have MSI 770-C45 (1.3b2 BIOS) and 550be

I have good case (side 250mm fan, front 140mm fan), good cable management and a good CPU cooler (Apack Zerotherm BTF-92 OC (http://www.frostytech.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=2197)

+ I have crazy temperatures !!!

Speed: 3600 (200*18)
Voltage: 1.28V (if I increase it, it's even worse :( )

HWMonitor, AMD OverDrive, Everest:
idle: CPU 36°C, core0 28°C, core1 28°C
load: CPU 54°C, core0 36°C, core1 36°C

core temperatures are OK, but CPU temperature is too high

I have good cooling I should get at least 10°C lower temps.

If I try to put more voltage, my CPU temps go over 60°C !!!!

I checked termal paste (it seems to be glued (I can't separete CPU and heatsink) - I use good termal paste from Zerotherm - tests show same performance as Arctic Silver)

I checked my heatsink on CPU max load and it was a little warm - almost cool - should it be hot?

What is wrong with my temps???

PS. English is not my native language, so sorry for all mistakes (if any :D)

I'm having similar issues myself. Even locked at 2 cores 3.1 GHz my cpu idles in the mid to high 30s and is in the 50s at full load. After getting a new heatsink the temperatures when overclocked have gone down considerably. Are you using the stock heatsink? Also what stepping is your processor? Mine is is a 922. I also wonder if we are getting wrong temperature readings on the cpu temperature. My core temp is usally about 10 degrees lower when locked. I wonder if anyone else is having the same problem we are.

2 cores 3.6 GHz (1.28V)
Cooler: Zerotherm BTF-92 OC
Good case (250mm side fan)

all fans on 100%

stepping 0921FPMW (can't unlock cores)

i say re-mount. but since ur temps vary alot from core 0 than 1 or 2 i think u might have a not-so-flat ihs. concaving or convexing, i'm not sure. maybe lap cpu ihs and hs?

I had similar issues and believe it's not an actual cpu temp sensor but instead a sensor near the socket. Using a thermal probe from a fan controller (I know not the most accurate in the world) I'd get the same temp as the cpu sensor when I placed the probe by the socket.

You might misunderstood me... I don't have 3 cores

I have 550BE (2 cores)

I think my IHS is quite flat - and so is the HS

I'm a little scared to lap my IHS (any reviews on Phenom2 lapping?)

I don't know what can be the problem... but if you convince me that lapping my IHS is good idea I might try it :D

You may just have a hot chip. My 955BE idles in the low 30's and loads in the mid 50's at stock speed/voltage UNDER WATER. I saw that it was somewhat uneven so I lapped it and that did very little to help it in the long run.

That said it still clocks to 3.9Ghz in Vista64 so I never cared.

So...

What does this mean? Is my MSI mainboard showing wrong CPU temps? Is it safe to overclock and have CPU at 70°C (cores still safe under 50°C)???

PS. I also don't understand that even if sensor is near the socket, that means that CPU should have even higher temps? I mean everything over 65° for 550BE is too high...

I've just been assuming the cores are about 10 degrees lower than the reported cpu temp and going with that for my temps. Means at 3.6GHz X4 I'm idling around 31 or so and prime95 full load at about 53. I think that's pretty safe from what I've read about what a phenom II can handle. Supposed to be rated up to 70 degrees. Then again I doubt it would have a long lifetime at that temp.

A sensor near the socket doesn't have a heatsink with a fan on it to keep it cool. If the temperature is too high you'll know it. Prime95 or occt will crash because of the instability too much heat brings.
