View Full Version : new build memtest86+
hello everyone :) ive been browsing round here for a month or 2 now... finally completed my new system -1 4890 card for xfire, system is as follows.
phenom II x4 955 BE 3.2 GHz
msi 790fx-gd70 bios ver 1.3
8 gigs - OCZ platinum amd edition 1600 MHz @1.65 v and 7-7-7-24-31-1T - OCZ3P1600LVAM4GK
msi 4890 oc edition
2x western digital caviar black 640GB
kingwin mach 1 1220 w psu
coolermaster cm690 nvidia edition (LOL)
i am now trying to get everthing to run stable at just stock speeds for the moment, here be my problem memtest86+ with all 8 gigs i get 16 errors 1st run. so start the trouble shooting, test every stick 1 by 1 in 1st memory slot all sticks = no errors. next i did the 1st 2 sticks in 1st and 2nd memory slots and then the next 2 sticks all sticks = no errors. back to all 4 sticks again = 60 errors. now for the 2nd 2 sticks in memory slots 3 and 4 = errors (dont remember how many), and then the 1st 2 sticks in memory slots 3 and 4 = 1 error.
so any suggestions or comments welcome :)
maybe i need to change voltage a little or bad 3 and 4 memory slots on the mobo?

I'd try increasing the cpu-nb voltage a little bit, increasing the dram v a bit, maybe dropping down to 2T. Some combination of these options should get you there. It's possible that the last two slots are borked but I'd try a couple of things before declaring them dead. btw what bios are you running?
ver 1.3 bios, maybe suggestion voltages to try as i plan to learn to oc for first time with this setup, but all in good time after i get everything stable stock

Try 1.3v for cpu vdd and cpu-nb vdd
waiting for 2 sticks to get done testing on slots 1 and 2... again... then ill up them volts and try all 4 again
upped the volt and ran it came up with 1168 errors with all 4 sticks in,set back to auto and errors went down to 208.
Try giving the RAM sticks themselves more volts too. I had to do that to get 8 Gb running stable.
say i try 1.7v on ram, instead of 1.65v or should i step up from like 1.67 then 1.7?

I'd try working up slowly or maybe even giving it a little less volts. You won't kill it it'll either work or not. I'm no ram expert (actually ram is my biggest weakness) but maybe try to relax some of the timings. 8gb of 7-7-7 @ 1600 may be too much for the imc to handle.
so im pretty convinced that my board and memory sticks are fine its just my settings imo. so side panel back on and stopped playing with memtest86 and moved onto prime95 and chnged dram V to 1.67 and it ran a few minutes till all four mini windows stopped. then chaged dram V to 1.64 ran prime95 again and 0 min till all 4 windows stopped. now upped dram V to 1.70 running prime 95 so far the 4th window has stopped at 7 min (test 5 4000 LL iterartions) and the 1st 3 are still going.
i can post SS's if needed.
i found nemo

run in blend
if it fails, probably ram.
or run small fft's if it fails, probably cpu
post screenies plz

Are you running voltages on auto or did you input them manually? I don't know what the stock voltage is for sure, but I believe it's 1.25-1.3v. Try cpu vdd 1.25v and cpu-nb vdd 1.2v You've never mentioned what cooler you have so I'm assuming it's a stock cooler.
yep stock cooler evething is on auto cept dram V and the 7-7-7-24 timings
been playing around with diff settings heres what i got so far....
ran prime 95 for an hour, running ram @ 1.72v

Good going there BoNg. You should try to run the cpu at lower volts. It looks like your stock cooler is just about at capacity under load.
hmmm cpu volts is set to auto, little more explanation on the stock cooler thing (note: i do plan on gettin new cooler just ran out of monies xD). and about five min after that screenie i got an error and stopped prime out of frustration:zombie:

GD70 under volts your CPU at stock volts, bump it up to 1.35v for the CPU

Well from your picture the cpu was running at 56C during the prime95 run. I know it's a stock cooler and I don't know what your ambient temps are, but unless your ambient is in the 30'sC your temps are a little high. Try running the cpu vdd at 1.25-1.3 . This will lower the heat a little bit and help keep you stable till you can afford to get a better cooler.
@ TurboDiv
Most guys are reporting stock vid's of 1.3-1.325 even with the little bit of vdrop 1.3v should be fine for stock clocks. Shouldn't he be looking for the lowest voltage possible.

Yea but he must know for sure that its not the CPU that is screwing his memory tests... ;)
well i ran prime 95 blend again think only thing i might have changed is disabled speed spectrum in bios. ran prime for 12 hours no errors. then i shut it off for awhile. should i keep playing or should i call 12 hours "good enough" and move on to the next thing? 0_o

Which spread spectrum did you shut off? Usually it's good to have the CPU spread spectrum off when overclocking with the FSB, but it may help when stock too? Weird.
12 hours should be enough.

Agreed that 12 hours sounds fine. There's only one spread spectrum option on the gd70 btw.
woo hoo good too hear maybe some prime95 fft testing now. any suggestions?
any and all are wecome as this is this build is the first destktop ive owned in like 3-4 years my last build was k8n neo 2 platinum amd 3500+ combo that i sold shortly after it was brought to life :(... so ive been been runnin on laptops and out of the "loop" for awhile :comp10:

If you ran prime95 blend for 12 hours you're good to go in my book unless you want to try and overclock with the stock cooler which I don't really recommend. If anything I'd try to find out if you're stable with less cpu vdd (1.3-1.325v)

Well, if he downloads Core Temp and checks temps while priming I don't see why he can't do 3.4 Ghz on the stock cooler...

Did you look at his temps in the screenshot while running blend? Too high for me. I'd look to find the lowest stable voltage at stock first and then work your way up.

True, I didn't even look at the screenshot really, just a glance.
eh ran memtest86+ again 2 passes no errors, guess its time to move on temps now, any suggestions on the best air cooler for am3/am2+ atm, and maybe ram coolers. ive looked into water but im still sketchy on it, leaks and so forth..:hm:

What's your budget and location? Maybe I can supply links to recommendations.

You can't go wrong with a Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme.
budget is no more then 200$ (way over for air coolers i know) im right by chicago. i normally order from newegg or tigerdirect. tiger sometimes has things newegg doesnt, but newegg is cheaper and free shipping most of the time :). maybe just maybe i can be conviced to going water but never know, if that happens then prolly 300$ max.
^ to the last screenie i posted it wasn't "speed spectrum" i disabled it was "spread spectrum"

If you can go that far you're better off going water, but you can get a Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme + fan for under $75 shipped.
heres some idle temps atm

Xigmatek S1284 EE is probably the best for the money, and will take that CPU as far as you can overclock it...
ive been noticing sort of big differences between speedfans temps and cpu-id's temp which is more accurate?

What version of speedfan? 4.38 as far as I know doesn't officially support the super i/o chip on gd70. Saying that, I use Everest and HWmonitor to monitor temps.
yep 4.38 uninstall.

There's a 4.39 beta you can get from their site if you really need to use speed fan. This version adds support for this motherboard.
