I've been reading these boards (great info here) for a couple weeks, finally got my account validated, and so here's my first post.

I have a 955 cooled by a Xigmatek s1283 on a GA-MA790FXT-UD5P with 2x2GB Corsair DHX DDR3 1600 CAS9. I've been working this overclock a few hours a day for the last week, checking stability with Prime95 runs overnight (6+ hours). I hesitate to push the core temp past 60C, and have found instability sets in around 62C. I removed my cooler the other day and realized how poorly the AS5 had covered the CPU. pic (http://www.pitt.edu/~tth6/miscFiles/cpuTIM.jpg)

Once I had reseated the cooler, my stock idle temps were in the low 30s and load was in the 40s somewhere with the fan at 100%. I started pushing it again (raising the multiplier only) and found that I can get 3600/2600 with +.05v/+.2v cpu/nb and decent temps that top out on the mid 50s. 2800 on the NB seems out of reach on air, while 3800 on the cpu (200x19) likewise seems to require more cooling than I have. 3700 was stable at +.05v, so I then tried raising the reference clock.

I got to 206x18.5 CPU/206x12 NB at +.75/+1.5 but saw temps as high as 68 during Prime95 so I ended the run.

Any ideas where to go from here? I was hoping I could get 3800/2600 with this and have it safe enough to run Folding@Home 24/7.

1283 just doesn't have enough dissipation in my opinion.

I would try, 1284, thors hammer, TRUE 120, prolimatech megahalems.

those corsair sticks can do CL7@stock voltages, check my sig

I'm trying to get 3.8 with as low a voltage as possible right now. Looks like 64C or so is unavoidable for now. I tried 206x18.5 @ 1.45 (+.1) but got a BSOD. Trying 211x18 @ 1.45 (+.1) - not really expecting it to work, but you never know

If I can't get 3.8 I'll shoot for 3.75 then 3.7. Heck, I may even swap the Xigmatek fan with my TriCool and crank that thing just for kicks. I do like a quiet rig, though.

Do you have a pair of quiet fans? You could maybe try a push-pull to help get rid of the heat and still keep it quiet.

I have a spare 1200RPM SlipStream that I could strap on. What's the best way to affix a pulling fan? Zip ties to the cooler or the other fan? I have an Antec P180 so the hot air from the s1283 is exhausted out the top, so at least it's not building up too much. I also have the 120x38mm TriCool that comes with the case in the bottom chamber. If the push/pull setup doesn't work I'll give that one a shot.

I had great results with the 1283 after lapping it (also lapped cpu). on some of the coolers I have seen the alluminum block makes contact before the heatpipes and lapping can cure this. I also added a 120mm fan to pull. Mine exhausted out the top as well so I just used 4 small velcro pieces on the corners as gravity was in my favor. The 1283 is just fine as long as everything is right. http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=219600

I was just wondering - has anyone noticed a difference in max overclocks between Vista 64 and Windows 7 64?

I saw no difference

3.6Ghz is the sweet spot for the 955s, and 3.8 is easy but hot, 3.9 is just plain luck.

That about sums it up.

With M4A79 Deluxe (AM2+ DDR2) i got my 955 stable @ 3850 with just raising fsb (275*14). Memory run's 1100 with tighter timings, and NB @ 2750. Temps are ~56c under prime. Try pulling fsb high as possible and see if it does better that way. I had no change getting stable over 3800 witn multi.

I'll give that a shot. I was trying tighter timings (CAS 8) on my memory at 212x18, with 212x8 memory and the system wouldn't POST so I had to clear the CMOS. I'm idling at 43-44C  which kind of sucks, but hitting 53-54C under Prime95. If OC temps get really bad, I may end up removing the heatsink again to see if it moved and if it did I'll have to figure out how to keep it form doing so. Or perhaps I didn't do as good of a job with the AS5 as I thought...

Nice chip there, charged

Might as well find out what my max FSB is.

Do AM3 cpus run hotter when paired with DDR3 memory? My 550 seemed to idle/load at lower temps when I had the Biostar TA790GX A2+ + Crucial Ballistix PC2-6400 DDR2 memory than my current setup (Gigabyte MA790XT-UD4P + OCZ Gold PC3-8500). I've reapplied the Artic Ceramique 3 times so far and still get about 5-7 degrees higher in idle/load temps. Maybe because the Gigabyte board doesn't have vdroop as much as the Biostar board???

I haven't seen a huge different yet. I use less volts on my DDR3 dims then the DDr2's, I would asume less then.

I recently scraped enough cash to get a Deneb !! (at last!)
turns out to be a nice overclocker but , core 3 is a bit weak and core 2 not much better. core 0 does 411x before gets a little weak with 1.45v CPU

core0 4ghz 123@3800

Also all stock air cooling.

u right, i have too problems with core 3. The best for me are core 0 and core 1.

I have my 955BE running 3.6GHz at stock voltage , NB 2.6GHz / HT 2GHz on air with Ultra 120 Extreme
it works great and fast enough for my usual task

I get about the same. Could be the Ram difference also. I do get slower if in XP tho.

How is the new stock cooler AMD put out?

Same as usual but its running my 955 no problems with 1.45v CPU @3.8 NB@2.6 1.2v and DDR2@1150c5 2.0v
temps max out after long load around 62-63c (which i guess is on the limit)

I just ran 6:45:00 of OCCT overnight at 246x15.5 for 3813MHz at 1.475v in BIOS, board tends to undervolt by about .03v according to CPU-Z. I think I'll leave it at that and work on the NB now. Temps are about 60C at full load; I'll have to try Folding@Home on 4 cores to make sure they don't get too bad. If I can get a NB multiplier of 11 that would be awesome. I'm hesitant to add much more voltage because my CPU is getting a bit toasty. Might have to go to push-pull this week. After I nail down the NB, I'll work on the memory. 246x6.66 gives me 1638MHz, not too far off of 1600, so I should be able to get some better timings than default 9-9-9-24. I did figure out that my RAM can function fine at 1.6v (at least, it can survive blend and OCCT for hours)
