my comp had a funny smell so i turn it off, open the side panel turn it back on and a transistor near the system fan 4 header (i think 4 the one near the bottom of the IO panel) starts glowing then while reaching for teh psu switch it bursts into flame and luckily went out with no power.
needless to say im never getting an msi again i got this because sniipe_dogg said that it was great and the best and that chew was getting records with it. but the last msi i had (975x socket 775) had a broken clock crystal and now this.
im having a horrible weekend i get beer that tastes like sunscreen, ditched by my friends who went to the giants game and now a burnt MB.
and now i need a replacement i dont really want an asus or gigabyte since ive had problems with them and hate +- bios voltages that gigabyte has traditionally and i hate how asus mislabels ram settings. so im looking at the dfi dk dose any1 know if it unlocks and how dose it clock
edit-
the fan on the header was a mid speed sanace for .25A and that should be well under the flaming part point and the fan never did that before

"Sh*t happens" with any brand. I wouldnt be so quick to dismiss MSI GD-70 over one problem. I would just RMA it as its no fault of yours and try again. of course thats just my opinion.

I don't really get what you are saying here. Yeah you got a dodgy board. If you say you will never buy <insert brand> you'll end up with no options in 3 years. All the companies suck.

I would just RMA it and get another, bad apples come in all flavors sadly....
I had a gigabyte with 2 dead lans right out of the box.......luckily in my case I needed a sacrificial board anyway, and one less thing to disable for bench sessions.......

The fans was plugged into the header and blow up in flames sounds like "sabotage " to me.
Those fans don't' usually blow things up if they're only 1/4 of an amp.
the asus motherboard have 24 watt fan headers and the cpu header is 12 watts.
DFI are usually great OC boards, the jetway board I have is nice quality board it's the old AM2 board with the 3200 and ddr2 side port.
foxconn might be another choice.

ive had the board for a week and a half so its still under warranty from zzf and i can just return it, and this isnt new with msi and myself. with msi i always go look this board is nice and its doing good things then i get it and it has a random problem, like with socket 939 i had one for a customer and it keeps loosing psi-e slots, and i had a problem with a 754 that would randomly drop usb. its like once i forget about the problem get another and some thing else goes wrong.
so what do u guys think i can ether drop it off and get a new one or anything at zzf or drop it off get my money then go order the dfi. and dose the dfi am3 unlock the 720 i havnt got a straight answer.
also the fan header is shot is it ok to use the board without that header in use

Probably safe to use. I've used boards with cooked pieces not in use anymore :D

RMA it and try again
if unsatisfied, sell it and get DFI
hopefully you got luck with DFI

the board still works, im not going to try that header.
it just the transistor just turned white in the center and the fan works in the other header

Alright, things like that happens...
But let me say something:
- ASRock : 3.6%
- MSI : 3.9%
- Gigabyte : 4.4%
- ASUSTeK : 4.7%
Those are the defective % of motherboard. Won't go deeper but this give a good idea of hardware failure.
AsRock lead the way and Asus are the worst, BUT!
Asus made more ''complex'' motherboard!
We all got 1 chance on 20 each time we buy electronic...
I already got a defective motherboard (Good old VIA chipset...)

asrock and asus are the same company. were are u getting those numbers and are those within 1st use or over the life time right now i have a board almost out warranty from asus with dead usb and im taking that back on monday also. ive got a variable rma fest.
i also dont think that anything should catch on fire even if its the coating on the transistor burning, but im hoping to get an in person rma tomorrow and if i can get a full refund i think that im going to do that and get the dfi

Its either tough luck or systemic error (aka user error) for a user to consistently have problems with so many brands of motherboards.
I too have friends who have such bad luck, and it isnt a coincidence that they arent too knowledgeble in hardware. They do prefer to attribute it to tough luck and I'm not going to argue with them :D

I never use mobo fans headers except for the cpu one sometimes, doesn't seem like a good idea to power stuff off the mobo when you can do it directly from PSU.

Not necessarily. Most mobos give really nice PWM fan headers that can either be thermally controlled or manually controlled via software.

i have such friends too, it must be a coincidence

If things never broke there would be no need for warranties. Possibly the Fan took out the MB? Heck, I have 2 fans onboard and your experience has me thinking too take them off. If not from the MB, a bad fan can cause resistance that.... who knows? Like stated above, there are no perfect companies. Not any of them. Anything built by man will break, the question is when. I was going to say the same about my PSU. One month and bam.... RMA. What an inconvience. Back in for several months and I don't even think about the RMA anymore. _ _ _ _ Happens. Give it another try and if it happens again you know. Wouldn't it be interesting to see a list of percentage of RMA's throughout all the manufacturers? I bet all have RMA's.
Good luck on whatever choice you make. For me so far. This is the best board I have experienced, not the only good one available, and my third MSI. One lost it's onboard modem after a storm. Yes, the Giants game would have been a better day... who knew....lol

Am glad i went the gigabyte route with am3!

I've had good and bad experience with MSI mobos as well.
On the other hand I'm pretty satisfied with my DQ6 Giga board, expect it lacks CPU IMC voltage control the way I want it to be. Nothing is perfect :(
I would say go with DFI zanzabar. They sometimes ship dead boards as well, but when it works it's brilliant .
PS. Have you by mistake bought GAC beer?

Sad to hear your GD70 gave up man. But to dismiss MSI as a whole is kinda harsh i think. It just happens sometimes...

i dont see how it could be user error its always different, it could be a problem with frys breaking them before selling it for the past ones. this one its just unlucky

Yeah I wouldn't dismiss MSI either after one bad issue. I had a used 7900GTX that i bought from a member here that went bad on me, MSI replaced it with no problems, and my friend is still using it today. As far as cutting them out, thats harsh. I did that with ASUS because they sent me 2 bad RMA boards and are going to send me another one till they find a working replacement according to the RMA department.
