PART 1

( the dead computer part) FYI my Rig is in my sig

I just installed windows7 and rebooted to vista for something and pushed the power button and got a half-start from the comp....so i unplug all wires and plug back in. Now it works....but no video is ever sent to the monitor...

Take case off and look at 8800gts card..push power button and the card just sits there for about 4 seconds then spins on and still no video is ever sent to the monitor. The hard drives/fans/etc spin up instantly....OK time to grab friend's video card and pop it in....push power button and everything spins up except his video card never starts. His card works perfectly by the way.

Unplugged video card and all ram and push power button, hdds spin and fans spin but no beeps from motherboard. Motherboard light is solid green.

So its either mobo or Psu. I'm guessing the mobo is fried.

PART 2

(new computer advice part)

The guts i'm looking to replace are: CPU-MOBO-Ram

CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 810 2.6GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 4MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 95W Quad-Core Processor **130 bucks at newegg <<IMO very nice pricepoint

RAM: OCZ Reaper HPC 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model OCZ3RPR13334GK **70 bucks at newegg**

MOBO: Not sure...... ** I still have my 8800gts card <<<assuming it still works.... What (budget-ish) Good mobo should I get?

I've been through enough bad motherboards to be honest with you and would like to buy a mobo knowing that it will outlive me....Yet not break the bank if you know what I mean.

OK I'm guessing ASUS M4A78T-E AM3 AMD 790GX HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard is the right MOBO to go with this setup.

Newegg has this board as part of a combo deal here. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.211941
You think I should just grab that?

P.S. Taking my psu to a shop tommorrow to see if i can get it tested.

I have the 810 on a MSI GD70 and am happy with it. It runs World Community Grid 24/7 as well as GPUGrid and I game on it. 3gz is easy another WCG team member has his 810 at 3.2gz. Under full load 24/7 it is alot cooler than my 9850, also 3gz and 24/7 100% load.

not a whole lot, probably not noticable, but a much better upgrade path... i would also consider an x2 550 & mobo that will unlock it to x4 - if you get to look at steppings before you buy

Not really, I can not tell a difference between the 9850 and 810 now that both are running Vista 64. Both have 4 gigs ram and same model HD. If you want to look at AM2+ like a 940 Newegg sometimes has some great combo deals on that CPU.

EDIT:
After reading your post again you might be best staying with AM3 as you mentioned lifespan. AM2+ is on the way out. An 810 now for $134 and be able to upgrade later as there are several new AM3s coming in the next few months.

am3 is the way to go, and i went with the x3 720 BE since a higher clock is worth more than 1 core and with the unlocked multi its alot easier to get to teh 3.8-4.0ghz range and thats about the total clock speed difference that the quad would get u and more clocks on less cores is faster than more cores with less clocks

and the gd70 or the gigabyte are what to go with, i went gd70 since i dont like gigabyte and it looks nice but the pws and NB rin a little hot. or the gx version

alright, I'm currently trying to talk myself into this combo deal

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.212580

3.2 Ghz quad-core. Asus Mobo.

Thing about the motherboard is I have a Lian li case that places the motherboard upside down for some reason unknown to me and thus I'm not sure but I think that can cause trouble with some north/south bridge heat sink designs. << again not sure on this.

I spent some time number crunching and I think this combo at this sale price is a good bang for the buck. I figure no matter how I crunch the numbers I'm looking at around 300ish for a nice setup.

Nice combo, what ram ?

2x2gig for 50 bucks

G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066

There are 2 options are far as mobo are concerned on the combo deal. The first mobo was am3 cpu slot and am3 ram only.

The 2nd option mobo was am3 cpu socket and am2+ ram only which is kinda cool since am2 ram is more or less the same real world performance for less money as am3 ram.

So..I took the ASUS M4A78-E AM2+/AM3 AMD 790GX which has the same southbridge "SB750" as a 200.00 mobo and allowed me to pop in the fastest am3 cpu currently out for sale as well

I love those uber sexy Intel leet motherboards but not the 300-500 dolllar price tag.....but they are fun to look at.

My next computer component is a solid state drive 32gig just for the Operating system.
