Ok, I'm curious here. I pull about 18k and some change with my barton 2500 @ 217x11.5 and my radeon 9700 pro @ 393/330...And that is with the OpenGL and D3D settings in my control panel at default, except I turned off vsync completely in both...This is my D2D setup...
Do you guys like turn the settings all the way to the fastest setting in the control panel, cranked fsb, multi, gpu and vram speeds to the max, regardless of artifacts and system stablity...Just so it runs long enough to get the benchmark submitted???

short answer-yes.
long answer-no.
artifacts will happen at some point, if they get to outta hand, then most will abort the benchmark... some don't care.
system stabilty is a must, but isn't always possible 100% so you just do the best you can as far as you can.

As far as going for records is concerned, 3DMark is like any other contest. If you are trying to break the world lan speed record, all you care about if how it performs during the run, not how it does afterwards. You are looking for the max performance from your machine for just that single run that will get you a max score for your rig. Think of it this way, after a Dragster makes its run down the 1/4 mile, it is need of some serious attention and work bro. But all that mattered is that it went all out for those few seconds. Most of the guys in the top spots on the ORB dont run their machines at those insane stresses 24/7...but I could be wrong.
When I bench, I push it to the point where it will do a loop or 2 of 3dmark......after that I back her down to the point where she is stable.

I see. So you do turn the settings to the highest performance/lowest texture quality in the control panel too, right?

yep... u head for Rage3D Tweak or similar and start working out all the tweak combinations to get you the highest points possible... and no-one will tell you what the highest scoring tweaks are as there aren't any... they're all a combination of what works best for your particular system.

Well, if *that's* all it takes. ;)
I've never tried benching like that before...I may just have to do that...

rest assured the top scores in the orb are most likely run with artifacts during the whole run.
