My dad recently built himself a new system and he's having a bit of trouble getting it to power up. He'll hit the power button and the board will start to come up (fans will spin up, LEDs on mobo come on, etc.), but then it immediately powers down. After it powers down, it will try to turn on again automatically after a few seconds with the same result until he turns off the PSU. Oddly enough, it will try to power up again even after turning off the power supply, though I assume only long enough to drain the caps in the PSU.

I've tried removing everything except a single stick of RAM, removing everything including all the RAM, I've checked all the connections, etc., but I can't seem to find anything physically wrong.

I'm of the opinion that the motherboard or PSU is DOA, but I was going to look for some other opinions.

His specs are as follows:

CPU: Core i7 920
Mobo: Gigabyte UD4P
PSU: PCP&C Silencer 750W
RAM: OCZ Gold 1600 C8
Video: Radeon HD3870 (for the moment)

We're currently going to test the mobo out of the case to make sure it's not a short causing the issue, but does anyone have any other ideas?

Well, after pressing him for information, I was informed by my father that he had been keeping the motherboard (with CPU and Ultra 120 Extreme installed) just sitting in a cardboard box with no kind of protection or insulation and had DROPPED the motherboard with HS and CPU installed before installing it in the case.

:shakes:

Luckily, Microcenter exchanged the mobo and all seems to be working now.

Someone remind me again why I help family members with computer issues?
