What would be the best idea to do to have an incredibly fast bootup time. I've got a mini ITX pc on its way but need a HDD. Should I get a SSD? I don't want to go uberly expensive, I was thinking about a 30 GB Vertex. I just want to be able to turn on my pc and have it load pretty quickly, say 10 seconds? Or is that too much to ask?
*edit* May be a stupid question but RAM doesn't do anything for bootup times does it?

More RAM will have a slight positive effect on bootup, but for lightning fast you really do need SSD. If it's just boot times you're worried about, then go for the lowest capacity quality drive you can find to use as OS, and then put your apps on another, mechanical HDD.

Bootup would mainly be affected by access times to the files needing to be loaded, and how much data can be transfered per second. So a SSD would have the largest impact on bootup performance out of the whole computer. A 30GB Vertex would definitely be the way to go.

Bootup times can be increased the most by tweaking the OS. If you run XP, you can use nlite to REALLY cut it down and reduce boot times to nothing. The second highest increase would be to get an SSD.

My HP ThinClient (5400 rmp2,5 HDD) has 6s bootup time.
HP has done good job with that XP

If you consern about boottime, do not turn off the computer :)
A good second option is turn off computer in Hibernating :)

use msconfig to disable everything in start up unless you really need a certain thing to automatically load if you absolutely don't want to manually do it.

That windows xp doesn't really contain anything if you boot within 6seconds, I'd love to see a video
Standby ->on, doesn't count, I think everyone in this thread refers to off -> on

A mixture of hardware and software is the best bet.
Use Autoruns to disable as much as possible of start up applications:-

As mentioned use an nlited version of XP also:-

Disable as many services as possible using BlackVipers guide:-
