I guess no one told you about this little angel: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103650&Tpk=amd%20810 :p:

95W, Great For Multitasking, and a whole $80 cheaper than the 9550

So what is your price range?

Best to stay away from intel lga 775 quads for now, you might get a better bargain with I5 :)

For your best bang for $$ stay with AMD's Phenom II :)

I say go for the popular Phenom II 940 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103471) its a guarantee 4 cores and runs at 3.0ghz. it be a great upgrade from a dual core :D

Do you still have your old mobo, and does it support 45nm quads? If so it might be cheaper to stay with Intel. If no mobo then I'd say an 810 or 940 would be a great deal. 940 is easier to oc on a cheap mobo too

Go AMD no doubt about it.
I tihnk the 550/720 are AMDs best cpus at the moment.
Great performance, great value.
