Ok, so there's the old PCI slot, and the newer PCIE slots of various types. Correct me if I'm wrong or am omitting something but here's all the types:
PCIEx16
PCIEx1
PCI
Lower ranked slots can fit in higher ranked slots (for example PCI or PCIEx1 in a PCIEx16, but not a PCIEx16 in any other).
I'm mainly interested in making sure a PCI and PCIEx1 can both fit in the EVGA x58 Classified's PCIEx16 slot closest to the mother board edge.

pci is pci and pci-X only. for for pci-E it depends on the card u can put any card in any sized slot, but u need to have 1x power support for a 16x card so its not a 100%, but anything 4/8/16x will work in a 4/8/16x slot and a 1x card will work in any slot, and most 4/8x cards will work in a 1x slot but graphics cards a toss up but most with external power will work

I'm assuming you know which PCIE slot I'm talking about on the Classified mobo (a PCIEx16 I believe). You're saying I CAN"T put a PCI USB card in there, but I CAN put a PCIEx1 USB card there (or a PCIEx1/4/8/16 USB card for that matter), correct?
I'm looking for a low profile add-on card hopefully for USB that can fit in that slot and not hit a mounted radiator that overhands the mobo. Basically, any capacitors have to be very short or non-existent. There's some examples in my liquid cooling thread (http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?p=3864925#45)

I'm preplanning all this so I don't have the case or board yet. I do have a cool USB mobo header that converts into two USB ports. I figure between this and whatever my IO panel takes up, I'll be out of internal headers, but I could be wrong.

PCI and PCI-X cards do not work in PCI-E slots.
PCI-E 16x cards do not always work in PCI-E 4x slots or 8x slots (never seen an 8x they didnt work in though so..)
PCI-E 8x cards do not always work in 4x slots
PCI-E 4x cards always work in 4x/8x/16x slots
PCI-E 8x cards always work in 8x/16x slots
PCI-E 1x cards work in 1x/4x/8x/16x.

Ok, I get it. So if I have a PCIEx16 slot on the edge of the motherboard, I can't use a standard PCI card. Anyone know of some good PCIE USB cards or other non-video PCIE cards?
Also, does older PCMCIA cards work in the newer PCMCIA Express Gate cards?

for laptops there are carbus and pc-e slots and they are not cross compatible and there are full and half slot pc-e cards and the full wont work in a half.
and im not aware of any good usb cards on pci-e but there are nics and esata cards. and im not sure why u want more usb ports if ur attaching storage then esata is better and u can use a powered hub for everything else

I have a fair amount of USB devices I don't want to have to plug and unplug from only two front ports. I'd say go for eSATA, but I don't have any eSATA drives not going in the case nor do I have any eSATA enclosures. I'm thinking USB cause of all the add-on cards they seem to have the smallest height (perpendicular to the electronics board). I have an old 802.11g wireless PCMCIA card that could make my desktop wireless, but that seems more of a novelty as I'd still go wired for reliability and speed.
Also, I have the extra cords and clutter of a hub.
