View Full Version : Best System

Ok guys if you had to pick one of these for free which would it be. Dont pay attention to the fact that in `05 there will be many 64bits apps out. This system is for day to day use and NOT for benchmarking. Please vote for one out of four.

picked the second one ! ;)
like that prommy setup. have to get myself a mach 2 for christmas! :D

None. Best system for day to day and no benchmarking would be XP2500/XP1800 DL3TC + NF7/AN7 + BH5 + Insert favorite video card here. Clocked up to 2.4 or so on air I doubt you can beat it for the price.
Why waste a perfectly good high end rig like those on the poll if you aren't going to use them to their full potential?

Well I'll bench a few times and try to get myself on tops of 3Dmark, ect but after that thats it. I will use it for my daily taks/gaming/folding..
I am 17 and I have this money cut out for my computer. I see no point in an oced Barton/TBRED if i will still have money left over which is for my comp. Unless I plan to buy a huge @$$ monitor lol
Evil_Spork
11-17-2003, 03:30 PM
go for an A64 with a prommie + 9800p from best buy($300) and ram of your choice.
Soulburner
11-17-2003, 03:39 PM
Hell yeah you can't go without a nice gaming monitor....maybe a 21" FD Trinitron....or some expensive high end LCD or even Plasma.
You won't notice the difference between 321fps and 452fps anyway.
Evil_Spork
11-17-2003, 03:50 PM
hehe true.
i snagged an apple 21" monitor for only $60, i cant tell you how nice a big screen is!
hmm.. you may want to try water cooling an A64, a gig of ram, 9800p, and a big monitor. that would be a VERY solid system. and probably stay in your budget.

Sorry Crash...
None of the above :(
For daily use (and the AMD'ers will shoot me) I would choose:
1) Asus P4C800-E
2) Vapochill PE
3) Intel P4 3.2C w/HT enabled
4) BH-5
5) Radeon 9800Pro
6) 2 - WD Raptor HDD
For daily use, homework, surfing, gaming and running multiple apps (gotta' love HT) this rig owns. AND btw the 3.2C will be REAL cheap REAL soon. PLUS!! You'd be upgradeable to Prescott, I believe.
As a daily 24/7 sub-zero cooler th Vapochill is more reliable, more attractive, more modern and cheaper!!

prescott is a new pin layout, no upgrade possible... go intel on that lil bit of smart thinking.
i agree with that system, except switch the intel for A64 parts. it looks like its just preferance at this point, whether you like amd or intel. im an amd person so i say amd.
the $300 9800p is at bestbuy, i just payed that for mine. its on the shelves for sure as i was there yesterday.
*edit*
oh crap, i just looked online, its back to 400!!!:( your out of luck there. missed it by a week or two. sorry man. try a store locally and check the shelf price, may still be hanging around.. doubt it though.

wow charlie that is some advice you just given me. only thing i dont like is the vapochill. i had a vapochill pe and i did not like it at all. it would give me -22C on evap meanwhile would be 4~7C in mbm whil.e my 2.4cwas @ 3.6ghz @ 1.65v
also i dont see them out for real cheap. frozencpu is selling them for $659 on frozencpu and their the cheapest reseller
where else did you see any new ones for a good price.

Prescott is being released for Socket 478 when it is introduced and not being moved into LGA775 until the Grantsdale chipset is released in Q2 2004.

11-17-2003, 05:47 PM
maybe a 2.8 i want 4ghz
charlie
11-17-2003, 06:02 PM
Crash,
It all depends on what you want to do...and yes you're right! The last time I looked at a Titanium Vapochill PE it was $479, lol.
Ok...2.8C is fine also! Here's the difference, with the 14 multi and the Prommy you'll run 280ish stable 24/7. Higher for benching and screenshots. That's DDR560. You'll have a heck of a time finding sticks that'll do that 1:1!!! And at 5:4 your memory speed is only DDR448. Not bad of course...but a 3.2 will run 16 x 250 = 4000 24/7 stable at 1:1 cas2, 3,3,6 (maybe even 2,5,2) DDR500 baby!!!! If you go 2.8C deffo get BH-5 and run DDR450ish at tight timings...the 3.0C is actually worse...the 15 multi is too low to go 1:1 and too high to have a nice mem speed at 5:4.
Here's the slightly altered plan:
Prometeia Mach I
Asus P4C800-E
Intel P4 2.6C (if you find the new stepping Z3????)
2 x 256mB BH-5
Swiftech NB Fan ('cuz it's cool)
Ati OEM 9800XT ($450 at Newegg)
2 x WD Raptor's (high on the 1337 scale :D)
TTGI550 4 Fan Mirrored PSU
ANd try to run 24/7 at 13 x 300 = 3900, 5:4 DDR480 cas2, 2,5,2. Much fast and mucho reliable :D Plus the FIRST Prescott's are 478!!
have fun!!

After just having a bunk 2.6c, i cant really recommend that anymore... not just me but corrupt also had a bunked one, and we both got it the same day last week..... mine did 3540mhz on a chiller and his did 3100mhz on the prommie lol...... If 4gs is not taht important to you, Ill get a 2.4c with the new stepping and run it at 320x12 or something..... its almost as fast if not faster than a 4g intel with lower fsb....... if you dont believe me check my 3dmark score.........:D
gokickrocks
11-17-2003, 06:15 PM
for everyday use, i would get one of those p4 shuttle xpc's...
if you plan on using the rig for a LAN box, i would not recommend using a full tower with a prommy...if you had to lug 1 around, you would know why

Here's where the 2.6c comes in with its sweet 13 multi. It will give you a good FSB and RAM speed. 300 5:4 2-2-2-5 should be very doable.

I know that I'll probably be beaten for this comment, and quite possibly flogged as well.
Considering that you will probably want to upgrade to prescott, or a new amd setup when the time comes, unless you desperatly need 4ghz, you might as well get one of the new stepping 2.4c's and run at around 300+mhz fsb 5:4 with tight timings. Before everyone pounces on me, you said you won't really be benchmarking, and so if thats the case, 3.6ghz with a still impressive ram bandwidth is pretty close to 4ghz with an impressive ram bandwidth. That move should save you enough money to splurge on the 'smaller things' (like a nice chair or desk, or keyboard or mouse) that often make more of a difference when your using the computer, a point that is often overlooked. Or you could spend the extra money +a bit on a mach2, which would be a bit more future proof.
and once again, just to cover my ass. I'm not saying spending extra money for 4ghz is stupid, its just that sometimes peoples perspective on priorities can get a bit out of wack. I can deffinitly say that sort of thing has happened to me, which is the only reason I'd say it. :D Just trying to help make sure you don't wake up one day and say to yourself "wait a second, I'm sitting on this peice of garbage
http://www.freedomaccentz.com/images/metal168.jpg
for 400 extra mhz?"

You won't notice the difference between 3.6 and 4.0.

For everyday use you could get the following :
->P4 2.4C SL6Z3 or 2.6C SL6Z4, OCed to 3.4-3.9GHz
->ASUS P4C800 non-deluxe, rev. 2.00(you don't need the Promise RAID, do you ?)
->1GB of OCZ Platinum PC3500 or Mushkin PC3500 Level 2
->ATI Radeon 9800 Pro/XT(whatever you want)
->some SATA RAID with either two Raptors or two high capacity Maxtors
->Antec TrueControl 550W PSU
->some nice case, a good mouse and stuff ;)
Not too expensive, the cooling and monitor are up to you, they could cost a lot.

Since it's free then,
I'd go with #4
Get a 2.8C SL6Z5 and enjoy some overclocking fun. Then, later on, replace the 2.8C with a socket 478 EE when they become affordable.

theyll never be affoardable, but 1.5yrs. It has a whopping 2mb of L3 cache, and basically its a xeon. itll be like 500 in 2005. big whoop. by than we'll be waiting on the tejas and not wasting 400-500bucks on a gutted xeon thats 1.5yrs old

Yes I see all of your points. I would settle for 3.8 but I wouldnt like to be on 3.6ghz (its not that exciting LoL) people get that speed on air =D.
Guys whats the best place to buy a CPU w/ the newer steppings. All of the local places near me are a complete rip off. I know no site really guarantees the stepping but maybe you might have an insigt....

SL6Z"3" - 2.4c
SL6Z"4" - 2.6c
SL6Z"5" - 2.8c
now I just have to figure out which CPU or maybe a 3.2 damn this is so confusing. Charlie you gave me so much to think about LoL.

Does the Mach I need a psu to work?? I thought it worked directly from the wall plug. What king of PSU you need to make it work properly 300W for example??
Thanks

Dude your getting me all wrong. You just hook upyour psu to machi/ii but it doesnt get power from the psu, it gets power from the wall. Some mobos have reset issues w/ the machi so you would use a 2nd psu to first power on the machi and then power on your system with your primary psu.
