The symptoms seem to be the same as the second laptop I fried.

Yesterday night, my dad was working on the laptop his lap. He was typing some stuff into excel, and then all of a sudden it shut off. He left it off for 5 minutes or so thinking it was a heat problem, then turned it on again. Now it doesnt do anything when you press the power button other than turn on the fan to low speed and light the LEDs. The screen stays black, no beep codes or anything.

What should I do? I'm going to take it appart today and see if I can pull the cmos battery. Let's hope its not soldered in place like the second laptop he had.

This laptop is a Compaq Presario F700. The second laptop he fried was an Acer Aspire 5100 which ended up with a dead motherboard. The first one, which I fried, was an HP Pavilion DV1000.

Yup it's fried, the startup behaviour is consistant with what hp says is fried and what I've seen in the past with hp laptops. Hp is also compaq and sometimes they use the same exact motherboards in both brands. I hate hp with a passion and why they keep making faulty motherboards for their stuff is beyond me especially since they recently lost a big class action lawsuit and now have to fix stuff for up to 24 months after the purchase date or something like that. I've had to send in one hp laptop and they replaced the motherboard. Other laptops have been out of warranty and the mobo costs $150 or more everytime. Oh and of course the only place to find that low price is on feebay... any normal website where you can just order online charges $300 or more for the same exact mobo. Best thing you can do is stop buying hp/crapaq go with toshiba or dell or someone who doesn't have a history of bad motherboards.

That is their way of saying "We don't like having to stock equipment this old, just buy a new laptop for $500."

I yanked the battery and it works again. I'll see if they will take the laptop back for a new board, I'm sure something is faulty in there.
