if u order from newegg there is a 35 discount with the am3 cpus and the ocz amd edition ram and u can get a cooler master rc-690 for $80 and its a better case IMO that should bring that under $800
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119137
and u could change to the 720 be x3 and then unlock it the gigabyte boards unlock the cpus to quads but it may not be stable

intel boards are crap at the price that they are at never buy one, and they dont oc well. get a dfi p45
the intel cpus u will need atleast $900 to get a good quad build on intel or u will need to talk some sense into him and tell him that amd is the only reasonable budget choice

Or get a AMD 920 and a 4870-4890 instead.Ok, let's see here:

Net Total: $800
So its $994 unless Glow9 can help you out with the $194 extra over the AMD rig :p: :stick:
If you want to go Intel for under $800, you're prolly looking for a Q8400 rig here:
Intel Sub-$800 Quad Core Rig
Foxconn BlackOps X48 LGA 775 Intel X48 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail - $110
Intel Core 2 Quad Q8400 Yorkfield 2.66GHz LGA 775 95W Quad-Core Processor Model BX80580Q8400 - Retail - $185

SAMSUNG 22X DVD±R DVD Burner with LightScribe Black IDE Model SH-S222L - OEM - $24
Antec Nine Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - Retail - $99
Total: $770
It is, however, not as futureproof as the AMD rig, as AM2+ users can drop in a future Phenom X4 3.4BE or a Phenom X6 whereas 775 users cannot drop in a Core i5 CPU.
Your choice.

A couple of things:
1. You can go for the 770 AM2+ here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128376&Tpk=gigabyte%20770%20am2_
2. The HIS 4850 1GB will squeal at load due to aftermarket cooler. Keep the XFX 4850 1GB.
3. The PSU, for a good cheap one, take this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817341016
It's 80 PLUS certified, which is important these days.
Other than that you're good to go

The USB cable is something that is out of my control. No clue why you can't pick one up from the local PC shop for $5.00.
Looking at the list as it is, you will have to give up the aftermarket cooler until he can afford one plus he doesn't need it considering how beefy the Phenom II coolers are. It's the only way to bring it under $800...and lose the USB cable too.
