well i'm just starting to get into computer hardware but dont know just enough to know what does what :p

im really looking for a sub $800 system that will let me run Flight simulator X (doesnt have to run it flawlessly, but would like to run high settings with no problem)

would also like to keep my options open for future upgrading so i would love crossfire/sli?

opinions on a build?

What resolution would you be gaming at? FSX is a quite 'badly' optimized game, it's extremely difficult reaching any high FPS numbers at higher resolutions.

From what I understand, it's also quite CPU intensive. Do you need all parts for your new build or are you aiming to keep some?

If you are in the US have a look at this.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814143188=approx , 170 dollars
Or if you like AMD cards.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161276=approx, 200 dollars

For a CPU it depends on if you like Intel or AMD.

This AMD mobo.....http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128387=approx 110 dollars
With this CPU....http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103471=approx, 190 dollars

For Intel maybe something like this. Its S775 but still feasible.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128359=approx. 110 dollars
And
Quad core for around 185 dollars...http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115057
Dual core for around 170 dollars....http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115037

Some cheap but good memory for around 50 dollars.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145184

And a new PSU for 90 dollars ......http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817341017

If you get the rebates it will be a little cheaper still.

Not sure if you are using an existing case or wanting a new one.

It comes out to around 600 dollars without a case.
Was just throwing out some ideas.

Either set up will play most all of todays games with ease at 16x12 resolution.

Check out Newegg and look for either a s775 intel sys or AMD sAM2+ or 3 that will handle the newer PHII CPU,s.
Or if you want the newest intel S1366 with core i7,s.
But they are a little more expensive.

I agree with sirheck, I'd get the Radeon 4890 and an AMD CPU. For the price range that you're looking at, it's in my opinion a better idea to get an AM3 motherboard that supports future AMD CPUs rather than a Socket 775 Intel motherboard that is on its way out. Performance wise, they're similar, but I'd have a look at some benchmarks for AMD CPUs and wait for some AMD experts to drop in.

If you're determined to get an Intel CPU, your budget of 800 Dollars is too low for one of the newer i7 CPUs, but I'd still go for the Q9550 over the Q8400: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115041

no, u dont want an NV chipset they are nothing but trouble and 2 9500 will perform like crap. and sli and xfire dont work well in FSX

u need to a mid/high end gpu (4770 or higher on ati, gt200 on NV). i think that u would be best off with an am3 and a 720BE tri core

look at this
MSI 790FX-GD70 AM3 AMD 790FX ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail $170
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130223

xfx 4870 1GB $150
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150352

corsair 850tx $139 and $30 mail in for $109
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139009
OCZ Platinum AMD Edition 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Low Voltage Desktop Memory Model OCZ3P1600LVAM4GK $80
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227447

720 black edition $145, $103 if u buy the ram with it
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103649

Subtotal: $678.96

that leaves a little over $120 for a case since u said u didnt want an HDD, and i know that MSI dosnt have the name that it used to but thats the best am3 board and that cpu will do 3.6-4.0ghz easy and more if u are good at overclocking

that xfx card is equilvalent to what geforce card? just curious

its between the 260 216shader and 260 55nm if u got 2 then its equivalent to 2x275 or a 295. there is nothing priced near it and if u want a geforce then u need to move up to the 285 or it isnt worth looking at them, and that dosnt fit your budget. that xfx 4870 1GB is the best price to performance right now.

u could move up to the 4890 $180 affter 15 mail in and its equivalent to a 275 or a 285 if u get a 950mhz+ model (950+ is about $250 though)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161277

the ati cards work in cs4 with gpu acceleration and they have noticeably better IQ in 2d and video applications over the geforce.

if you were to go with intel, and an equilvalent setup as the amd one you suggested what would it be? (ignore the $800 tag for this one) just curious to see how an intel setup would compare

edit: a friend says i would have some real heating problems with that setup? *shrug*

There's no such thing as a budget build for FSX. You need a supercomputer to run it, its coded really bad.

for intel for a similar set up, (im just going to do the core, CPU MB ram)

gskil pi black 800mhz cas4 $55

DFI LP DK P45-T2RS PLUS LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail $115
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813136053

e8400 $168
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115037

Subtotal: $337.97

or change for a q9400
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115131
subtotal $388

the amd sub was 388
but the amd gets u a current platform and it will OC higher than the intel quad to be about the same performance, i would strongly recommend the amd

if u went for a nice clocking quad on the intel (q9550 or q9660) then that would put u at a higher price than the 955black edition amd and that will out oc them for a lower price and still keep u on a non dead socket
