View Full Version : How high 3.2 on water?

I'm thinking about a 3.2 P4 and a Epox canterwood board. RAM to be 2X512 of Mushkin Lvl 2 black BH5 chips.

Water cooling will be Iwaki MD15 pump 5gpm & 11.1 ft. of head driving a copper Cascade with a large single pass rad + dual (or quad?) 130cfm fans.

How high of a O/C would this set up be likly to give?

What changes would you suggest to improve my chances of a good high O/C?

Thanks,

Craig

Really depends on if you get a good chip or not. I got a dam 2.8 last week that just wont go over 3.1ghz for anything, no matter how cold, or volts.

You'll probably get another 200+ mhz over what you would get on air. If you do get a good chip, over a factory HS.

single radiator would handle it fine. Quad Radiators??? You pelting or something??

I still have my 1.6a @ 2880mhz cranking along for almost 18 months on water with 1.8 volts cranking to it running F@H. Quiet, A 79 ford Pick up heatercore with a single 120mm fan @ 7 volts. Quiet and putting out more heat probably than my 3.2 @ over 4ghz.

3.2s are actually binned so you'll definitely get a good chip, unlike a 2.4-3.0 where it's not guaranteed. With water cooling like yours and a good cpu, i wouldnt be suprised if you hit 3700. Although with the vcore you'd need to run that high, it might only be safe for benching and not 24/7. Really depends on the quality of the CPU you get.

Mine will do 4ghz on air without touching the volts. 4.4ghz in my vapo max. I keep it @ 265fsb 24/7 running F@H 24/7. and with the fans in my Vapo @ 50%

anything above 1.6v doesnt do a thing to make it go higher

Thats a nicer 3.2 than mine, :( but I am still tinkering with this Extra Special version. Seems this particular 3.2's limit at 1.55-1.65v on st8 h20 is 3.6(perfectly stable) and 3.7(mediocre stable)

I only received this chip a few days ago and will tinker a bit more to find its limits.

hehehe,

Dual or quad FANS with one large single pass rad (like The Dude has), I just don't know if I'll use a push=>pull set up with one fan on each side of the rad, or dual fans on each side of the rad. Just as Dude's rad could take 4 X 120mm fans if he wished it to.

I'm thinking that 4 @ 7v would be a bit lower noise than 2 @12v, and would push at least as much air.

Wow, 4 ghz on air! I want one.

BTW, nice watercooling setup you proposed. You can't do better than that with straight water.

Hi

I have a chance of getting 1 too any of you have pack date
09/24/03 and a SL6WG 3.2 gigs im not really sure if I should take it, have a 2.4 @ 3.4 1.535 volts.

If you are on air I would not get the 3.2, your FSB would be way lower and it would be a slower processor.

Hi

well im running it at 283*12 fsb snd using the 5/4 on mem with hardtimings, but wouldnt i better off with 230*16 1/1 on mem and hard timings, and im using a Watercooled setup, right now max temp on cpu is 37 degrees 100% load for a couple off hours.

No, the chip with the high FSB will be faster.

I switched from a 2.4c that would max out @ 315fsb, Lot of work to keep it there and a lot of mem volts!!! and northbridge cooling.

Got my 3.2c out of the dell server deal for $399 for the whole computer, back when 3.2's were still $600+. Put a 2.0chip in it and some Memory and a cheap vid card and sold it for $425 so i almost go the chip for free.

A lot less work using the 3.2chip. I Max out stable @ 270fsb, and i got some ram in our forums Geil 4200 that's 1:1 stable at that speed. I've tested it to 290fsb 1:1 with my 2.4 and it's stable.

My memory speeds are about the same as before even though i've had to run some slack timings 1:1. still around 6.4k to 6.5k. About the same as running my hyperX 300fsb 5:4 tight timings or 315fsb 3:2

So i really didnt lose memory speed, I just picked up another 5-600mhz. And actually my temps are better.

You still have to get a real good chip no matter what. AKA... Luck!!!!!

Yes but since he is not using phase change, just watercooling, a chip with a lower multi is going to be better.

Hi

hehe well if lets say it will go at 235-240*16 1/1 it will be faster right, I do have a vapo here just sitting and waiting to get to work, but I like watercooling so noiseless :). I will be getting it for an ok price, in just wondering if its worth it.

These are good points regarding the use of lower multi chips.

What IS the best chip to go with for best overall performance with a water rig such as I'm setting up?

And how high would the RAM have to go with a 3.2 & 1:1 ratio to match/beat the lower multi chips?

Thanks

ID say get the 3.2C or a 3.0C great deal for the price.

Yeah, that's my thinking at this point. Get the 3.2 and run 1:1 as high as I can get it to go. If the newer Epox boards with the high voltage options are for sale here by then, that's what I run it on.

I'm getting closer to having a new rig set up. I have the following for it so far.

PC76 case, it's huge
Mushkin Lvl 2 PC3500 black 2 X 512
PCP&C delux 510
Full set of Evercool fans & a Sunbeam reobus
Turtle Beach Santa Cruz sound card
Monsoon 5.1 speakers
Iwaki MD15
CAscade
2-342 single pass heater core + 4 Delta 130cfm fans
DIY res of acrylic
Tygon lines

Still a good deal to get for it yet, but a good start. Thing is I want to buy the MB, vid card, CPU with care to match them well with each other and what I already have.

I want this to be a fast water rig.

I'd like to make a run at the fastest water rig at VRZone & see about try'n my first go at 3DMark.
