I bought a used laptop to my boss about a year and a half ago ( a crappy p4 with 256 megs of ram/ Medion MD 5400). I accidentally broke the plugin power jack and asked a former friend ( aspiring electronic engineer) to reapair it. He did some big mistakes ( he removed the broken jack with looking at the connections to the mobo).

He then started trying all combinations ( we would not accept he did not do what he was doing). He tried what he said should be THE solution without any success, until it powered up. After some seconds ( I completely desbelieve what ever he says he knows) I realize that he did not remove the battery ( it was probably booting from there) and told him he had to remove it to try for real. He removed it and obviously it did not start up. After 2158523 combinations the computer powered up.

After some time of usage ( due to poor soldering skills and also applying glue over the soldering) the jack was torn apart. After that I took my poor mans laptop to a serious shop. I think I left the PSU in his home as I cant find it at mine. The fact is that they gave me back the laptop saying they could not fix it. The weird thing is that it has a power jack solder and placed in a very sturdy position!

What can I do apart from getting the appropriate PSU in order to test it? ( Ive asked the PSU to the mofo and he does not answer me)
I happened to smell what I think it was the PDU ( power distribution unit) and an unpleasent smell came off.

Any help is really thanked :)

Thanks, I really appreciate your input! teh reason for not replying before is that the XS server does not notigy me via email when someone replies to a topic.

The PSU is 19v and 4.7 amps.. any clue what i can do?

EDIT: any idea of what I can do if the power distribution unit is f.. up? remember I do not live in a country where you can go to walmart or a similar shop and buy whatever you please :S

you could buy a new jack from an electronics supplier.
