View Full Version : LOST 2 cores I7 920 P6T Dlx bios upgrade
Upgraded BIOS from 1403 to 1605 on the P6T Deluxe to attempt to correct a S3 problem and have lost 2 cores! Now CPU-Z, task manager, everything shows only 2 cores/4 threads. Found some stuff on the net talking about having to reinstall the OS (64 bit Windows 7) but REALLY don't want to go there unless it is the only choice. Have re-imaged the drive, returned to 1403, but still 2 cores. Help.

you dont have them disabled in bios
you cleared cmos set defaults flashed reclaered cmos reset defaults powered down and rebooted?
No, not disabled in BIOS. Actually tried going to one core then back to "ALL" in BIOS but no help.
Did go to BIOS defaults but was lazy and did not clear CMOS. Think it would be worth a try?
Later - what a silly question. Let me try the right way to BIOS upgrade as above. Be right back.
No success. Followed your classic recommendations to the letter. :help:

well you can always flash to previous bios and clear and reflash to new?!?
Did that as well, returning to my original BIOS before I started yesterday but the same outcome. Makes me believe it is the OS, hence the reason the few on the Net talked about having to reload the OS. I'm just hoping for any alternative to wasting the day reloading all.........
If not bios issue, then OS... go to, msconfig>>boot>>advanced options and check to see how many cores...select 8 and then reboot (with HT enabled and all 4 cores active in bios). If fails, may have to detect HAL and then reboot before it will let you reset to 8.

Went to "go to, msconfig>>boot>>advanced options and check to see how many cores" and 1 to 4 are the only options available.
Have you got a procedure for "detecting HAL"?
hmmm...the detect HAL checkbox should be there. I have same windows build as you. I bet you that would solve your problem, but dont know what msoft did with the detect HAL box.
You should just have to check the detect HAL (box near the pci lock), reboot, then would give you 8 cores, then select 8 cores, uncheck detect HAL and reboot. But detect HAL is not on mine either...think it was on earlier build, unless I have lost my mind.
EDIT: actually looks like detect HAL only available when multiple OS on same hard drive....
Been looking how to force Win7 to reset HAL but can't find anything. You???
UPDATE:
Soooo, went back into msconfig/advanced and unselected the box "number of processors" and rebooted. Guess what, all 4 processors are back again!!!!!!!!
Haven't returned to my overclock but at least have the 4 horses back!
Nope, I cant find anything. If you have more than one OS, you see this option below...but basically HAL is mobo drivers on simple os...dont know install them would fix. Reinstalling OS is a pain. Also I would try removing cmos battery for 10 minutes, to make sure cmos was cleared prior to having to reinstall OS as well, even though you cleared cmos ? using button before.

RGE, thanks for hanging in there with me.
Good to hear you got them back! Much better when you figure it out...so if happens again, easy fix, rather than another reinstall.
