View Full Version : Asus P6T & i7 920, can't get 4GHz stable

Builds fairly new, current settings i've tried below
Tried 200*20 with below settings but getting blue screens after a few minutes, not sure if it's safe to increase voltage on cpu further as it's reaching almost 80c on some of the cores which seems hot to me.
Should I push with extra volts or I should I hold off with these temps?
CPU 1.35V
CPU PLL 1.80V
QPI 1.35V
Everything is on auto except dram voltage which is 1.64 and of course ram timings, oh and turbo is off.

That is a bit high. What kind of cooling are you using? Don't up the volts until your temps are more stable.

try 211 x 19 or 190 x 21, will be far easier to stabilise ( look out that ya rams can do the extra speed of the first setting, or drop there ) also check if ya uncore is not too high ( but at least 2X ram speed )
If you got a dud CPU like I have you might need a bit more Vcore, but the odd multi works better mate, trust me
what cooling are you on atm ?

What kind of cooler do you use (stock or after-market)? You probably need to reseat heatsink. Idle at 80c is really high.

@ shocky
can you post some shots of CPuz before it BSOD's? Give us the main tab and the memory tab. This will help a lot.
Also don't be scared to push ram voltage over 1.65v, as long as the QPI/DRAM voltage is within .5v of it.
For 4ghz I need 1.326v idle and 1.36v full load, these were my daily crunching settings for 24/7 crunching. Never failed on me.

find out if you have a C0 or D0 cpu by running Cpu-z
if you have a C0, vcore is a little low for these cpu's
D0 is opposite..

I dont think he idles that high, maybe thats full load. If on stock cooler, that is completely normal, even with some aftermarket heatsinks. THese chips run hot, really hot. I got into the 70's at 4.2 ghz on water!

I'm using the Ultra-120 Extreme S775 version with single 120mm fan with MX2, sorry yes that is full load.
I'll give 211*19 a go as suggested, but I get the impression the CPU needs more volts, it is warm today to but still the temps arent good.

try bumping the voltage slightly. also HT off will decrease temps a lot, if you want to give that a shot see how you like it with HT disabled.

It is D0 arrording to CPU-Z

Hmm, surely it's not worth disabling HT.. Hmm worth a try I guess.

Disabling HT won't really make a difference unless you run applications that need 8 threads. Unless you're folding or doing WCG, etc, you won't need it. Do you usually use all 4 of your cores?

a D0 should not need that much voltage for 4ghz. Note I said "should"
Try reading through this guide bro, try settings some things manually, alot of times that can make all the difference

Running OCCT now with 1.375 and pll ay 1.90, been going for 20min without errors which is the longest yet, load of 81C though. :( Hoping this is just due to warm weather but it's only going to get worse over the summer months..
Tried a few settings suggested but never made much difference
Will get some cpu-z shots for you guys.

suggestion. Just to try and see if this is your problem. Try lowering your RAM divider from 8 to 6. I need to do so to get over 4ghz. If not I can't get is stable to save its life! Try it out if your current settings fail and let us know if that was the problem.

I doubt that will make a difference but i'll try almost anything at this point. :)
edit, failed after 40min, no difference really..

With the same cooler and one fan about 3.8Ghz is my max for crunching 24/7 because of temps on C0 or my D0. Of course my D0 920 is no better than my C0s...

Are there any air coolers available that would make a difference? I thought this was a good cooler..
Also, I added a second fan, made no difference to temps at all.

so shocky you lowered your RAM divider and still failed? Sorry just wasn't to sure of what you meant on your post.

I think vQPI's a bit low no?

Yes, still failed after around 30 minutes so no change.

Really, I thought it was a bit high. What would you suggest?

Try 1.45v and see what you'll get~

whats a safe voltage to run for QPi daily? I think my RAM issues is related to insufficient QPI voltage, I think I have not ran over 1.32v on the QPI. Just trying to be safe.

High vcore and high Vtt can also cause instability. And tbh i dont think a D0 need 1.4v for 4Ghz and 1.35vtt for mem at 1600c8. Better start from scratch. First find vcore running LinX with mem at 1200. And then find vtt by uping the mem at 1600.

key to success at overclocking is patience. If he starts from scratch he will probably get better results. You are right, I never thought about telling him this.

I was just clocking my 920 D0 to 3.8 and @ 1.41Vcore it crashed instantly on OCCT but now I am @ 1.23vcore and it passes 1 hour. With these i7 more voltage is not always the answer ;)

I have the P6T with 920 c0/c1 revision. I am running at 20*200 @ 1.42 vcore. I have been running this way since Feb

yeah same here at first for about a month I ran 4.2 GHz HT on at 1.42v. Then I lowered it to 4Ghz when i started crunching, to save on power bill at 1.34v. BUt I found that things stayyy much much cooler at 3.8 Ghz 1.282v. This seems to be the best balance between speed and temp/power draw for crunching IMO. Mine is C0/C1 as well.
