G'day fellas
Team.AU strikes again! hehehe

Got into some benching this weekend with some groovy hardware. Maaaan how good is this motherboard. I seriously dont think i've ever had more fun with a board or testing a better motherboard EVER!. For those of you like myself who did not know about TweakIt feature Asus have on their boards you gotta get one of these things and try this. It's real time (hardware) based manual tweaking/adjustment of most voltage settings etc and FSB on the fly even during benchmarks or windows startup etc etc

This is seriously kick ass

I got the board recently and did some initial testing but being old school i was just using the bios to adjust settings. I met up with Derek Yu a few days ago and talked about this board so he asks me if i've used this TweakIt feature. i was like errrrm not yet but i'll give it a shot....damn i didnt really what i was missing out on . I've seen a lot of benchers report that they die on LN2 a lot and some take CPUs as well so i'm keeing my fingers crossed it doesnt cause its impossible to find a reasonable CPU these days lol and while my chip is not a Q822A4xx it's not too bad.

This was my first bench session on LN2 with REX. I had a few tests on air to get an idea what the board can roughly do so i'll hopefully be able to improve on the scores. There were some issues with the OSes i used but i'm just to lazy to keep ghosting drives

It is really frustrating to find out that Rivatuner has the same problem in XP with dual cards like the issues I had with clocking of second 4870X2 card. I was basically forced to use CCC to OC the cards and max clocks were 1000/1200. You can see that i benched single card at 1090/1172 which would have most certainly made a big difference in all crossfire benchmarks :(

HARDWARE SETUP
Asus Rampage Extreme (1104 & 1104pi bioses)
Intel E8600 CPU (Q820A599) -153C CB
Corsair 2GB DDR3 1800MHz CAS7 Dominators (Micron)
2x Asus Radeon HD4890 1GB GFX Card
160GB IDE Hard Drive with Windows XP Sp2/Vista (light-ish)
2x (:D) Corsair Nautilus 500 Watercooling on GPUs and NB
Kingpin F1EE and Thermolab custom dinos22 pot :D
Corsair HX1000 1000W Power Supply

Thanks to Asus Australia for providing the board for testing

Many thanks to Felix from OnlineComputer.com.au for lending a couple of GFX cards for torturing

Here are a couple of shots from the last session. I didnt have camera handy to show the Thermolab pot in action sorry but it was great. i do however prefer F1EE. Maybe i'm just used to it but it's just a kick ass pot made by a kick ass OCer so that might have something to do with it too :D

always enjoyable to bench '01
i had a fair bit of head scratching in the initial stages until i realised my PCI Express frequency was a bit too high (130MHz in Xfire)

123K run >> my GT1 is great, nature looks fine....but once again proxycon and troll are bad....it has to be something to do with my OS or software...surely i cant be suffering from that slow down BS we had issues with 4870X2s
i think judging by viss's run this should have been under ~140K

Vivi must have had a problem with his run....i've shot past him by 4K even with 6.6GHz on his side...
i did however have much higher GPU clocks which will definitely help AM3 as well :)

Seriously potent stuff there dinos!

When i had my 2x 4890 weekend i was running on 3:5 divider for some stupid reason, only after my ln2 was done i saw how bad my runs were ;p. its only the RAW mhz that made it score high
That am3 run i did with a single 4890 was wrong mem divider (1600mhz) and with the 0121 PRE-45nm bios which destroy's performance, it was a stability run to see if i could run at 6.6ghz, but when i checked the score it was 1st for HW so i uploaded for the lols. Not anymore anyways ^_^.

Dino your Efficiency on those runs are insane.. I wish i could use your mem divider on 6.6 but i dont think that will become a reality. But im sure thats not all to your scores, it would sure help allot in AM3 :) but you are an amazing tweaker.

exceptional runs at what would seem as a "low" frequency on dualcore of today, but you scored as high as 6.4+'ers.

An RE is a stable board hey? i can run forever on the thing and never loose performance. they rock.

ps: Nice validation, you almost reached my Am3 frequency :D

hey vivi ... dude your scores are killer.....it's not just raw MHz as you say....i digg you scores man......you are showing us all how it's done :yepp:

hey chew*> i assume that software will let me clock both GPUs fine yeah? THanks for that tip

Time to order more LN2 and improve results a bit hey :D

hey bazza what's it remind you of? :D heheheheheheh

i think this 400 strap might be weak as piss to be honest after running a quick 32M run the first day

that looks awefully slow to me at 6.3Ghz  or maybe it was my OS as i am having some "issues" with it :D

WoW! It's obviously not time to totally jump ship to i7 eh? That looks like a really nice cold bug temp on that CPU.

dinos22
05-10-2009, 07:22 PM
lol
i can only imagine what these Elpida based ICs (from 2000GT kit i have here) will do on the Rex if i was able to clocks my old Microns so high.

Cant wait for some CAS7 action here too....should help with most benchmarks :D

[XC] gomeler
05-11-2009, 06:28 AM
Oh yeah, not sure if you did or not, but insulate under that black plate between the CPU socket and the DIMM slots. I think this is how a lot of REXs die. Just a suggestion, have high hopes for some banging numbers out of that setup.

awesome scores dino

were you using ssd or hd? os corruption sucks with hd, i've had more success with ssd
gpu @ 1ghz is good, hows the runs with 1050mhz on the gpu, are they potent enough?

dinos22
05-11-2009, 06:45 AM
yeah i had a thought when i was installing it all but i've tried it now twice...one really really long session and the whole setup was bone dry

i might squirt some plastic spray under there just in case heh :)

just std hdds

i dont know about SSDs and this kinda benching as i just from rig to rid and just boot into same OS get rid of the prompts first time round and way i go heheh

every comp we've been to we managed to nail the SSD drives somehow....how can it be that these things dont even last us a proper session really...........to be honest i would only use SSDs for HDD related benchmarks(PCMARK) and normal laptop use but leave normal drives for general benching

Good stuff dinos

What were you doing with Tweakit exactly. I've played with vcore in Windows but that's it.

lol @ bazx :D

dinos22
05-11-2009, 06:06 PM
vcore/vnb .....cant recall if i played with vtt now
also FSB during runs and for screens
also temps on all components and voltage monitoring as well

it was allowing me to do things a lot quicker than i'd normally do in bios

the other thing was for example i'll take a screenshot and then back down on frequency to save it as you sometimes risk losing it due to too high a frequency when you're at the edge

another thing i was doing in AM3 for example i would start AM3 at lower frequency and then jack up fsb as the run starts and then lower it miliseconds after the last explosion as i kept losing it there at higher frequency as well as once it's finished while hitting print screen at benching frequency or after i try to exit

i also played with it during certain 3DMARK01 test....going higher and lower where i thought i could extract some more

the other thing i needed tweak it was during windows startup depending on the temps i had .......if i crashed and could not change FSB in time for next boot i could lower the boot from 6.5GHz to 6.3GHz quickly during initial startup

there are a lot of options and i know they are all very small things but they make a big difference in an LN2 session

benching for max frequency with CPUz and setfsb will gain you less clocks then CPUz and TweakIt

i felt i was a lot more efficient doing things without the need to go into bios all the time :)

05-11-2009, 10:08 PM
Yeah TweakIT really shines in 3DMark (mmmmm, '06 CPU test), but can also be quite useful in things like wPrime where the test gets 'harder' the further it progresses ;)

good point

there are a lot of things i could think of doing

vantage will be interesting on ROG boards if you are able to do the same thing during CPU tests as well as 3DMARK06 as 3D stable speeds could sometimes be 200Mhz higher than CPU tests :D

does it not let you publish it in '06/vantage

dinos22
05-11-2009, 10:42 PM
i think i have some initial 3DMARK2001 runs when i started testing the CPU for 3D frequency with actual project saves on the benching hard drive. I can dig out one of those runs which i think i ran at 6250 and then had CL or dragos or some other test at slow increases of speed to see where it will crash and recorded screens and project for reference........... If i find them I'll try publish them and see what happens....lucky i didnt mess around with these fastest runs then if it's not allowed except for AM3 of course :D

What about the Thermolab pot, Dino???? Is it as good as it looks?

it's nice and all man but i went back to F1EE on the second night
i'll try to do some comparisons head to head when i have more time
right now i needed to get some results asap and i needed to use what i know how to use properly to get what i want

this CPU as i've discovered has a very precise CB and being greedy as i am i was always at the edge of stability hence the need to be at edge of cooling. I wanted to use it on the second night just be be sure i can be in control as 1M Pi and AM3 can be very frustrating bencharks for me

having said that > this pot has about the same mass as F1EE i just have to bench it a fair bit to be able to give a fair comparison between the two

On that board with the voltages you can run, you should be able to do nice CAS6 action EASILY at 1800+ with 1.7v - 1.8v. I have not actually played with the Elpida's much, busy with other stuff. But, based on feedback they rock on non i7 rigs since you can give them more voltage.

i fired up the rig last night to do a single 4870X2 3DMARK03 run and did a couple of 123K runs and then it went to :banana::banana::banana: >> started giving me the dreaded GT2 and GT3 low FPS bug which i could not figure put, installing new drivers, reintsalling old ones, reinstalling the app, changing to 2xdifferent OSes

weird thing is that i expected to see even higher GT2/GT3 in my initial runs then i got but then it went to :banana::banana::banana: >> GT2 was at around 840FPS in really bugged runs later heh

here is the second run i did >
