Heat dump in case versus heat dump out of case........
If AMD dumps heat out of case with a reference design........they must have a reason.
Me personally the first thing to go is a single slot cooler.....brand new out of the box....it won't even make into my rig with a single slot....

None of the available cards use that cooler, they use a hideous dual slot cooler than dumps heat in the case.

Based on what I've read XFX is going to be releasing a HD4770 that uses the premium dual-slot cooler that AMD offered to their partners and possibly 1GB vram.
I'm awaiting on that for my next build. :D I was gonna go with a 4890 but with the amount of gaming I do now adays I think a 4770 will last me until the 5800's hit.

LOOOOOOOOOOOL
You really should have taken a look at the "reference design".
However, you make a good point that we can twist on its head.. if AMD dumps HEAT INTO the case with a "crummy" reference design.. perhaps 4770 isn't such a hotplate and perhaps a single slot cooling solution would be OK..
For those of us who just want to be "xtreme" with CPU/memory and don't waste too many cycles gaming the noggins out of a card, single-slot might be ideal.
I'm looking at you HIS .. thanks for single slot 3850s and 4850s. :) Now gimmie a single-slot 4770.

Personally, I'm waiting for a passively cooled model for my HTPC...
With only a 50w (load) draw I don't see why not.
Looks like a really nice <$100 card!

Damn straight that's my card when it's released!

Hmm dunno think dualslot is fine as no doubt this thing outputs about the same heat as my 8800GT, mines single slot and when im folding things get very toasty even on 100% fan.

yes.. The single slot on the HD3850 was nothing short of awesome.. and that card drew a bit more than this even.. I don't think even rthe 4850 was much different.
it's absolutly silent at idle, and even under 3dload it's not obtrusive. Quieter than my GTX285 stocker at idle especially..
i agree, this 4770 cooler sucks donkeys!

The old school 4850s had a single slot cooler that worked well. Basically, for a card to be useful in my system it has to have a single slot cooler. I just use too many slots to give up adjacent spaces.

Yeah. I had two of the original 4850's in crossfire for a while and it was an extremely mean and lean setup. It was nice and quiet with lots of power for 2 small cards. :D

I'm building a mini-itx microbeast, a single slot would work out rather well for me in this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811112227&Tpk=pc-q7
but what I really need is a shorter non-ref design. The card in its current state won't fit.
When the 4770 was announced I was hoping for a much smaller board design due to the smaller process size but nope... :shakes:
The best cards I know of that will fit in the PC-Q7 are those really really short non-ref 4850's from HIS and Powercolor.

I've read a number of reviews and despite the low power consumption it still apparently gets up to 70C at load. There are supposed to be two type of stock coolers and the cheap ugly one is the only one used so far. Non-reference ones will show up in the weeks to come. Personally, I'm tempted to sell my 4850 and get one. :yepp:

GeForce 8800GT like single slot cooler would be great with these.

Indeed. Only dumped mine cause I needed more VRAM (bought at launch no 1GB models).
And, yes, a passive 4770 would be a great HTPC card!

A Plea to AMD

. I write this in passing, a fanboi I'm not,
don't flood me with Phenoms, they're not really hot.
. No need to say Sorry, I remember your hits;
The Athlon, K6-Three-Plus, and Opteron bits.
. The days of 386-Forty and 486-OneTwenty,
When Jerry was King and Real Men(tm) A-Plenty.
. At times you did stumble, K5 almost blew it,
And that ATi purchase (?!?), but Hector saw through it.
. Now a Golem of Graphics, in your Sanderite realm,
You forged a reprieve, from Intel's overwhelm.
. So Lords of Sunnyvale, please hear my plea,
For God's Sake, bring a Single-Slot 4770 to me.

About that XFX, it's not the same thing as the dual heatpipe review cooler (http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=222693&page=15).
Yes, got it...and already sent back. As for heatpipes, two empty holes... The cooler performed lousy without them, no surprise there.
