I want to put together another machine to tinker with :D

What would you guys recommend for a good mobo, proc and ram for a testing build.

I've got all the other parts covered.

It really just comes down to if you want to use DDR2 or DDR3. With as cheap as DDR3 has become, that's the route I'd recommend. A 955, some DDR3, and a board.

Do you need more than two PCIe slots? If so, you'll want to look at the ASUS M4A79T Deluxe or MSI GD70 probably. If not, there are any number of nice 790GX chipset boards that will serve you well, and they're less expensive to boot.

PII 940BE and a cheap good overclocking MB. I'm running it with a cheap DFI 790FX board and I'm stable at 3600Ghz with just a very slight increase in core voltage. The board and cpu was less than $300.00 after rebates and stuff. You can find similar setups without rebates. Ram is a matter of choice because it's all pretty cheap right now. I've got my eye on that new OCZ low voltage memory as soon as it hits the Egg.

I would get this,

Maybe its ok with the tri core. But i had that motherboard with a 9950 and burnt out the mosfets pretty easy. Even with a heatsink i put on them. That board has decent overclocking capabilities for price but i dont think it can handle the heat of a quad honestly.

How much were you looking to spend on the setup overall?

Its a matter of what are your future plans for this build...if you want the possibility of more options then build AM3.

If you wait a bit the 45nm Duals are coming out and they should be quite fun to clock for the $! As far as a board goes if your gonna clock dont even consider buying a board without adequate mosfet cooling! Ram you get what you pay for usually but if you do your homework here at XS you can prolly get some good IC's for a fair price!

If you just want something to play with i would get a 720 - you can play with unlocking the 4th core on top of the general overclock!
But if you want something to use I would probably go 955 w/ DDR3.

for the mobo I would go either with the ASUS or MSi as mentioned if you want an FX board.
Throw in some coursair or OCZ ram and your good to go!

All depending on your budget of course!

kumas might be fun to oc, as well as the new ph2 chips coming out soon

I have just got a 720, and was wondering what motherboard to use for it
I have looked at the Biostar, but have heard bad things about blowing mosfets....
And since I want to use my SS on it, im not sure
but I dont want to spend that much, considering I just spent money on an SS, and some decent DDR2.

There even more new chips coming out like the athlon x4 x3 and x2 as well as a phenom x2

i would wait just little bit and then see your options

I actually just bought this, CPU temps are way to high for me, idles at 42c loads at 67-68c, doesnt seem to be throtling. Stock cooling, Im not sure whats normal for this cpu but it seems high to me. Any advice?

I'd have to agree with the 720BE. Great value and a lot of folks are having good luck with getting the 4th core going. Although that new 955 is looking appealing when I do decide to get a new board and some DDR3 to go with it.

720BE all the way!

I absolutely love this processor. You get all the cache from the quads, but split over fewer cores = better performance in single threads.

Its so cheap and overclocks so well, it is your obvious choice. I don't think there's a single better CPU out there for bang/buck ratio.

+1 Phenom II 720.

@ M4D H4773R- those temps are high my 720 was about 30C idle and 50C 100% load on stock cooling.
