So i'm working with the F4A bios....so far everything seems safe,

Testing ram clocking to see if any losses are noted....Just running ram at specs in an effort to get the bios out to you guys quicker.....

First up cellshocks......No tweaking done.......all I did was set primary timings at rated specs cranked FSB, set voltage within specs In this case .1 under spec with the cellshocks......I call this easy mode...testing the way an average user would test....

Cellshocks 2x1g pass with 2.2 volts rated for 2.3................

OCZ golds 2x2gig ( more important ) rated specs at rated volts..........Easy mode set 5-6-6 and 2.1 volts and left everything auto and go......

Mushkin 2x1gig rated 2.0-2.1 volts 5-5-5-15 @1066........pass........Easy mode set 5-5-5-15 and 2.0 volts left eveything auto and go...

Overclocking next......

Well I got 4 gig benches on my drive I need to get off.....Unfortunately board will not post anymore....I might have gotten frisky on the NB clocking + 4gig cpu..........having gigabyte double check.......bios on hold till verified.....

I have beaten this board up preety bad so we shall wait and see what they come up with...

Well here's where I was prior to detonation :D guess it didn't like that 2800 NB I was shooting for + the 4gig clock on air.

Yah I just got an asus replacement.

Its OK, I personally feel the gigabyte is more stable.

I noticed tony pushing some real nice memory clocks/timings with some ram he was testing in this thread (http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=223507)

Now he mentions that he tops out around 1280 (cas5) i think. I with my lowly PC6400 ram on a Phenom9850 maxout around the same 1286 is the limit of benchmarking. Now it seems to much of a co-incidence, that both generation of CPU max out around the same frequency using DDR2 (regardless of ram it seems).

Is this indicating the limit of the IMC using DDR2? It does seem that IMC has been tailored for DDR3 on Phenom II (which arguably is the sensible thing)

Anyways unlucky with the board, any ideas what provoked the failiure? Just heavy benching or is the board sensitive to voltage when pushing IMC/NB?

It wasn't prior on another beta bios.....In my review of the 955 I was benching 4gig + with 2800 NB......I did bench on phase DI and LN2 on this board however......first time I have used the board since then.....Might have damaged it pushing well over the limits then.....It was fine till I asked it for 2800 NB on air last night.

setings in BIOS, i mean, will be similar as my 790x-ud4?I hope too for 4GHz on 790x chipset...

Can't answer that question.......I don't have the board to verify.....

stable on what area? What does asus have what Gigabyte is lacking?

my impression is that asus gives a bit better mem clock?! is it possible that gigabyte could do same well with micron d9 (crucial ballistix 8500) when ddr2 is already proven technology?

unfortunately my choice is between lower end of mobos (gigabyte 790x and asus Gx). ddr2 of course. so I have bet on brands instead of, lol.

me abit owner, lol

Well if your worried about ram clocking I would not be looking at 790X and GX boards.......4 layer PCB mainstreams versus 6 layer PCB enthusiast boards...ram clocking suffers a tad...

The asus clocked ram preety darn good......this seemed to clock ram decent to......the asus voltage regulation sux IMHO......the gigabyte is rock solid.....

you are not giving me an easy choice ;)

I guess that I buy 2 mobos instead. now buy Biostar GX then wait for a FX when it becomes as sold remaining stock for GX price when FX800 comes. I believe 790FX is last DDR2 system so I`d split two kits of memory (4x1) for two rigs and play a bit

I think I`d rather give up a few cpu mhz for more mem mhz :)

Regarding Asus, do you mean that it is not accurate or gets vdroop while OC`ing?

Severe vdroop and or overvoltage or at least with the last bios I was testing......( 1102 ) Not sure if its fixable via bios.

maybe asus need make a new revision of mobo? :D lets wait and see.

now i let other speak here about gigabyte :shakes::shrug:

I'm so waiting for this new BIOS...

The more I look at it, the more it seems that there is a batch (new stepping?) of 955 Phenoms that didn't get included in the F3 BIOS and so they all boot at their minimal settings.

New board is on the way, just need to duplicate what I did to verify and test NB clocking and it will be good to go.......

Preety sure it just let go from prior abuse, I had to peel off my eraser from the last time we put it under ln2 to do air testing I didn't hit it with a hairdryer either or bake it in the oven after LN2 like I normally do.....so many possibilities.......more than likely my fault. ;)

Lets wrap this up with f4a bios shall we?

Got ahold of another set of ram...

Easy mode........set 5-5-5-15 2.1v ( rated ) and 225 fsb and boot....

http://chew.ln2cooling.com/790FX-UD5P%20Ddr%20II/790XUD5P%20F4A%205.JPG

And then we finish where we left off with a round of stress testing with high clocks both CPU and CPU NB

Yah would you like me to tune for SPI?

;)

You can't expect a fast run with all those benches run simultaneously bud ;)

I can break sub 17's without all that other crud already benched.....

Dang those are some pretty nice Air scores,, @ 29--+NB 600mhz sticks, 955 and that mobo actually look like a good pair of Aces to me.

Well i should say" You make it look good:up:":D

Honestly this is hands down my favorite board.

It does exactly what its supposed to do, all ram runs stable at spec and has oc potential.......

The only issue is NB clocking appears to be somewhat of a struggle now, I will see if I can have them tweak that in a future update.

heh...great superpi and wprime...Its at 32 bit Windows? Can u test in 64 bit Cinebench, i tried get to 16 000 points, but i have not luck :(...Max to time about 15 500b. Higher is PC unstable in win7 64 bit

I have no 64 bit software nor do I want it.......I did run cinebench in above screens though....score is right under wprime.......90% of it is covered by other things...that is 32bit XP, however I am using vista 32 now more because I have no choice for certain benches/configurations......., seems ok to me.....does what I want it to do at least on air..

I haven't used it in a while. I actually loaned mine to someone with some ram.

I haven't heard from them since. It was working with thuban however.
