View Full Version : you know how i do...920 D0 + EVGA Classified = sub 7 min 32M + 100% OC
i'll let the other guys shoot the moon on BCLK, i am just interested in one thing and one thing only...those of you that know me know what i am talking about.
here is the setup: Intel i7 920 D0 - 3845B026
MMouse Rev3 CU pot w/LN2
EVGA X58 3X SLI Classified - Stock cooling
Corsair Dominator-GT 3x2GB PC3-1866 7-8-7
ATI Mach64 PCI
Corsair HX1000W
3 x Ultra Kaze 2000RPM
start with the updates then the old stuff...mmm, 5.3GHz 32M 920 :D
and what a weekend it was. i didn't get a chance to do a whole lot of benching but i did show the lads there my latest with this crazy little 920. nothing like 5.3GHz 32M with a 920 :D
http://3oh6.com/forum_posted/reviews/memory/blade_pc316000/32m_5299-1.png
it is just too bad my 975 wasn't as good as this multiplier challenged 920.
first off is my max validation, but like i said, it wasn't my main concern. i simply wanted 250BCLK and pretty much quit when i got it.
http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=557386
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v220/3oh6/ocx/classified/cpu-z_5278-1.png
then i toyed with a little 1M action...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v220/3oh6/ocx/classified/1m_5216-1.png
and finally had a couple cracks at 32M. i was checking for max clocks and not pushing memory so there is still room for improvement but after only just cracking 7 mins with my 965 not to long ago, crushing that time with a 920 was quite fun.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v220/3oh6/ocx/classified/32m_5195-1.png
then my time was up and i had to head back to the hospital again for another shot in the chest. the good news there is that i should be healthy again in a few days...no thanks to you Chris, although it turns out you weren't completely to blame ;)
***update with results from post on third page***
oh, and just so you guys don't waste your time...cold on the north bridge doesn't help BCLK ;)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v220/3oh6/ocx/classified/_MG_2353.jpg
sure feels badass with the NB at -40C though :D
updated CPU-Z @ 5320MHz - 253BCLK (http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=558936)...100% overclock if i am not mistaken
and a quick update on 32M as well with one higher BCLK. played with voltages for 10 minutes and got 1 more BCLK consistently stable for CPU-Z, 1M, and 32M.

another update with 06 at almost 5.2GHz...
i try to ignore you as best i can Ron, but i would never snub you :D
10K looks like it is 5 miles away at this point, but i did get the GTX 295 running with high CPU clocks and squeezed a pinch more out of the CPU. i had a 5200MHz + run down to deep freeze when i got a reboot 3/4 of the way through :brick:
either way, this is the best 06 i've managed so far...

Amazing!
Impressive job Jody! Congrats!
thanks buddy, more left from this setup in memory timings but i can hopefully squeeze out another BCLK or two with some fine voltage adjustments.
Fantastic job! :yepp:
LN2 ?
yup, forgot to put that in, just added it now. temps were only -55C ~ -60C for this run though. any colder didn't help as it is BCLK limited. i can bench at -90C with this chip and boot as cold as -125C before i get cold boot issues.
What tweaks you using?
tweaks aren't a good term, makes it sound like pushing buttons. i run a well tuned and prepped OS with all the basic processes to improve SPi, nothing fancy. i've posted my processes too many times to repeat but the information is out there.
sweet Jody congrats! how does the board fair with C0 stepping cpus interms of bclk.. C0 vs D0 how much difference ?

come on George, you know you can't ask a blanket question like that, it all depends on the CPU :)
the 965 C0 i have right now hates BCLK. 206~209 is all it will do on air on any board. under cold that goes up to about 225~230ish. it is the only chip aside from this 920 that i have used since getting the Classified.
this little bastard is prime stable at 215BCLK on air in the Rampage Gene without trying. I haven't had it on the Classified on air yet, this session last night was the first time they met. it is my first D0 so i have nothing to compare it too, and i didn't have this board since the last time i had a decent BCLK'ing C0. so really, i don't have a whole lot of info.
and thanks, already on the road to recovery

Some pretty nice clocking. Looks like your chip loves VTT Jody..
i forgot i had it that high. on air, this CPU won't run with anything over 1.45v...nothing higher will POST or run after changing in Windows. it was one of the things i wanted to check to see how cold affected it, turns out it can handle VTT at sub-zero temps. i guess i forgot to lower it when i started running.
any insight on the IOH PLL vcore? Sorry if you are ignoring me :) you dont have to answer
sorry, didn't think you were actually asking a question since the screen shot covers it, but yes, running at 1.5v. the voltages in the screens might not need to be set as high as they are either, i didn't really play around due to time restriction. normally i run this board with both IOH and CPU PLL at 1.5v. never found a benefit over that on air. i was messing with these during my short BCLK hunting but plenty of work to go i think.
Thats what I hear. Another EVGA launch party eh? Cool..

the NB pot is one that DetroitAC made for me a while ago. i initially got it for my 790i boards but never got an E8600 to put it to use, figured i would give it a test run. it is nothing fancy, but man that NB puts out some heat, it really can bounce temps quickly.

in the screen shots i was running 1.6v too. the guys at the GB comp found out that i don't bother running these i7's under LN2 at anything less :D
i quickly tried upping the NB ratio by a couple multi's but nothing would run at all. i just gave up and moved on. but now that Dino has said what he has, i will look into it a bit more. these last two runs have come in quick 60~90min sessions as i am pinched for time. i'll really sit down with this chip in a week or so and see what it has.

Nice result Jody. I did not have this problem with the 4870X2. I have some GTX 280's here but have not tried them in SLI to create a more capacitive load on the PCI/e bus. Mind you, the load of the 4870x2 should not be too far off that of the 295.
aahh :D and to think I thought you were snubbing me. Oh me of little faith. :yepp:
Thank you Jody.
10K cpu score would be an amazing feat  but I'm sure you will pull it off soon.
i try to ignore you as best i can Ron, but i would never snub you :D
10K looks like it is 5 miles away at this point, but i did get the GTX 295 running with high CPU clocks and squeezed a pinch more out of the CPU. i had a 5200MHz + run down to deep freeze when i got a reboot 3/4 of the way through :brick:
either way, this is the best 06 i've managed so far...

man that 920's a keeper, is it really temp sensitive at that speed, or you have a big range to play with?
man that 920's a keeper, is it really temp sensitive at that speed, or you have a big range to play with?
it seemed to be. i run with a MMouse Rev3 pot so temp swing for CPU tests is quite the art form to deal with at these clocks. i basically had to hold pot temp between -75C and -80C for 3D tests (random drop outs occured colder than -80C), then get the pot temp down to -85C for the start of CPU to keep temps down for the swing...hit the pot with some heat at the end of CPU to keep from cracking -80C and back into 3D.
i was having such good luck at that temp range that i just stayed there. the chip can idle in Windows at -130C but SPi load would freeze the system instantly at anything below -85C. not really sure how colder worked with 3D as i stayed above stated temps.

yea the higher the load with these cpus the smaller the range of temp

Congrats Jody, loads of memory or not, it takes talent to do something first. And these half budget half extreme are what I like best.
On an unrelated note Shamino, Vr-zone forums is like the jungle, I went there a bit after xtremesystems was down and I can tell you, I came back with cuts and bruises. The amount of trolling, personal attacks and bashing is ridiculous in the news section.

I like the "Totem Pole" insulation on the NB Jody :D Are you feeling any better?
It reminds me of how I insulated a waterblock with a TEC on it. I glued it all together with silicone gasket adhesive.:ROTF: It worked!!

yeah Ron, i wanted to just use Armaflex tape but it was still in a box coming back from LA...so i improvised. seemed to work pretty good, pot never got colder than -40C though so it wasn't much of a test.
Nicely done
thanks Ron...i've got the big guns getting lined up for some real 3D ownage with this setup  (you'll understand the rolling eyes when i post results)

and what a weekend it was. i didn't get a chance to do a whole lot of benching but i did show the lads there my latest with this crazy little 920. nothing like 5.3GHz 32M with a 920 :D

it is just too bad my 975 wasn't as good as this multiplier challenged 920.

it sure kicks the snot out of my 975...short multiplier aside. and that wasn't photoshop, i swear it is legit...must be some kind of CPU-Z bug.

there is no room for all of that with my new 786x995 monitor...so i guess i can't share that info :D
jody, when are you going to start believing in big uncore?
when i can get better times with it...until then, i'll just continue running low uncore and spanking every one else's 920 at high uncore ;)

that is like asking me to drive a V-Tec engine and keeping it under 6K RPM. creating a false limit to prove a theory wrong doesn't work.
you are on a GB board, lord knows i don't run one of those. i am on a Classified at 250BCLK. i am not discounting high uncore, i am discounting high uncore at 250BCLK. i don't give a rats ass what you are putting up for times at 4GHz, run a 920 at 5.2GHz ~ 5.3GHz with high uncore and we'll talk ;)
...oh that's right, you can't run high uncore at 245BCLK+. oh wait, you can't run 245BCLK at all on that board :shakes:

The lowest uncore is double your mem multiplier. (in your case, 2:8)
