View Full Version : Strange reboot prob. on P6T Deluxe v2

My new setup would run for about 5min on the express gate or in the bios setup and it would reboot itself.
After than it would reboot in a loopback and the fan of the PS goes into high speed (sort of like when the rad on your car runs hot and the fan kicks in).
I already did the below:
1. clear the cmos
2. with min device installed (just video card, cpu & ram)
My PS is a Corsair HX1000 so I dont think it is power related.
My setup is as follows:
P6T Deluxe v2
920 D0
Corsair HX1000 PS
3x Dominators
4870
Is there any settings in the bios would cause this ?
Like monitoring some fan speed and it would shut down it does not see a fan is not connected.
I see in bios the cpu temp. is only 40ish and the 3V, 5V and 12V rails are fine so I really puzzled what is the problem.

go into bios and watch your cpu temp until it reboots, see if it goes up. sounds like a cpu overheat issue.

I did it yesterday before I went to bed. I just got to the hardware monitoring page and let it sits there and I watch it.
The temp is not hot and one strange thing is the temp. of the cpu is lower than the MB ??
The temp of the CPU is about 36C
The temp of the MB is about 38C

I did another test this morning.
My CPU fan is a 3 pin type so I remove it from the MB's CPU fan header and connect directly to the PS power line.
It runs for 3min and I see the temp. of the cpu is 38.5C while the MB is 38C.
All off a sudden it powers down.
Now I cannot power up my pc again. The fan would spins and then it stops. I see a blue led near the DIMM sockets flashed once.
My setup is now bare min. with ram & vga card only and the MB is out of the MB try so it is impossible that I short something.
I also clear my cmos but still the same.

my mb temp reads 42c and cpu reads 30c, my four cores read 44c, 44c, 40c, 40c. So that looks normal. Pull your cmos battery out for a few minutes and reset your cmos, put the battery back in and pull your memory dimms out and use one dimm to try to post with. If it posts, wait to see if it reboots. Test one dimm at a time and see what happens, and do that with all dimms. a steady blue light (on) under the dimm slot means memory good. Are you at stock voltage on everything?

It did take out the battery when I did the clear cmos.
Finally I took the system apart and took the MB to the vendor with the cpu & RAM.
It did bootup in the shop with each of the 3 RAM.
Anyhow, the store exchanged a new MB for me and I will try again tomorrow.
The 1366 backplate of the thermalright HS is not symmetric. I wonder if it short out something in the back of the board.
ps. The thermal paste looked even when I pull the heatsink so heat probably should not be the cause of my prob.

"The 1366 backplate of the thermalright HS is not symmetric"
That's what I thought until I rotated it 90 degrees. Your'e talking about the cutouts not matching? Oh yeah, unplugging the PSU when resetting the cmos is a must. Forgot to mention that.

The holes are symmetric but the cutover are not.
You trace the shape of the backplate on a piece of paper and then you turn the backplate 90 degree and you will see what I mean.

I know exactly watch you mean when you say it's not symmetrical, make it look like this. Just keep rotating it. Which Dominators did you get?

You removed the stack cool 2 ?
This dominator -> TR3X3G1600C8D

So, you are saying that after it reboots, you cannot get to the bios again until you reset CMOS?
Also, have you tried to boot with only one stick in the board? (in closest slot to CPU socket)?
Try the following:
1) Shut off PSU, and remove the battery, and flip it around in the socket. Leave it there for 30sec+ (2 min is the max, no point in going higher. 30sec should be fine.), then flip it back around, and switch the power back on.
2) Boot up, and go into the bios. BUT:
3) Once you get to the main bios screen, immediately hit F10 (to save to CMOS. saving no changes has a purpose).
Now, if it tries to reboot, but hangs, then there is a fairly big chance that your CPU is farked.

No, the stack cool 2 heatsink is under the bracket. That's the way it will look when you have the backplate on right.

I see that after I tried it.
It is still no go after I exchanged the new MB.

It will not boot into bios.
I see power to the MB because I see the "reset" & "power" button light up. After I hit "power", the fan moves, the blue led next to the ram slot flashes once and then it dies.
Nothing will happens if I press the power button again.
I need to turn off the PS and then turn it back on. Then the same scenario again (i.e, fan moves once & die).
The old MB booted with my ram & cpu in the store but the store exchanged the MB anyway.
Now I tried again at home (with the new MB) and same things.
I am going to the distributor tomorrow. The HK distributor is responsible for the P6T D v2, Corsair HX1000 & Corsair RAM. I think one of the 3 items is faulty.

Strange, maybe a bad psu then. Did the store use thier psu or yours.

The store's.
The funny thing is his PSU looks like a no brand cheapie PSU.
Mine is the top of the line Corsair

That's really strange, but that's the only component that was different between your place and the store. Same MB, same memory, same cpu. Different psu and maybe video card. But I don't see the video card causing this.

I went to the distributor today and he confirmed the PSU is week and not stable on the voltage rails except 5v standby.
He exchanged a new one for me and we run memtest for 20min (with the new HX1000, my p6t deluxe v2, my dominator, his video card & his cpu).
He said it was rare to see 2 PSU's die in a row and he claimed I may have a voltage problem at home.
This is kind of strange and HK power is very clean and my flat is only 1 year new.
ps. In HK, 99% of the people live in flats which the power is from the central main of the building which are different from in US and Canda where people mostly live in houses.

I am running memtest86+ for almost 25min now at home.
So far it is stable.

I had a similar issue with my Gigabyte EX58-Extreme mobo, it was that the mobo seems to have a compatibility problem with TWC based PSUs, I changed the mobo with an Asus R2E and now works fine.
I suggest you try another PSU, try another corsair PSU or for better try a deferent brand PSU.

Oops, I'm late with my reply...sorry for that.
