View Full Version : Could someone explain ratios to me?
I just got back into OCing on some very old equipment. ABit IC-7 G Max 2, Corsair XMS DDR PC4400 TCCD, Intel Prescott 3.0E, NVidia GeForce MX420 (I'm not even sure who makes it. And plus, my 6600GT is not working ATM). I've been messing with my OC, and hit a wall at 3.633 ghz, and figured it might be wise to learn how to use the ratios on my Motherboard and could probably get a decent OC playing with those. Can somebody explain them to me? Maybe link to an article that has that sort of thing explained? Things like the FSB/AGP/PCI Ratio, DRAM/FSB ratio, etc...

On these old mobo's it's best to lock AGP/PCI to 66/33Mhz mate, as not all GPU cards and eg soundcards like to run on an overclocked Bus.
Might also be that you are reaching the limits of ya CPU ( stability wise) on water.
IS PAT enabled ? or some sort of turbo mode ( no idea for the Abit bios )

AGP/PCI should be locked at 66/33, if you haven't got option to lock it and you can just set ratios (i don't know how it is made at ic7), then make them as close to 66/33 as possible. For example when fsb = 100 best value for pci is 1/3 (33mhz) and for agp 2/3 (66mhz).
With RAM you have to know possibilities of your memory and set it as good as possible, with suitable timings etc. Your CPU has default 200fsb as far as I remember, so for example setting ratio to 1:1 gives you 200mhz (400mhz effectively) for memory, and so on.
I have the AGP/PCI locked at 66/33, but I'll be putting in a 6600GT soon, I'm pretty sure that could handle the increased bus. Would that be wise to up it at that point?
There is a Turbo mode, but the machine dosent boot if I set it to that. And if I set that FSB/DRAM to 1:1, it dosent boot either. Perhaps if I play with the timings and get them right. I think right now it's at 5:4. Also, the OCZ Voltage Booster I have, does anyone know if that will yield any performance gains and allow me to get a higher OC?
I've seen people hit this overclock with the same processor on air. I know there is more potential in there. I've also heard that my board is awfully legendary in terms of performance.

Yeah that's pretty much the king of S478 enthusiast boards. I had an Abit AI7 back then but god help me if I can remember much, sorry. Maybe I can find some old forum posts heh.
EDIT: Actually think there was an IC-7 Max3 but that should still be a great OC'er.

In my opinion there is no point to make higher bus than 66 for AGP, I haven't ever noticed any better performace because of that. But ofcourse feel free to check it, just don't overdo, overclocking is mostly trying :)
I haven't ever tried turbo mode, but always when I read what people write about it, it just makes PC doesn't boot. I don't know what is it for and I haven't took closer look for it.
I haven't got any experience with OCZ Voltage Booster as well, so I can't help you in this case.
To set timings/ratio as good as possible you have to try, try and try.
