GTX 295 interferes with garage door remotes

RF frequencies apparently right on par

Of all the GPU horror stories we've witnessed over the years, they have been very few and far from the one spotted today. According to Skydive from the EVGA Forums, his brand new GTX 295 Quad-SLI setup is emitting just the right frequencies in the RF spectrum to interfere with his garage door openers.

He claims that the problem resolves itself when he shuts off his system and notes that the problem never occurred in the past with any other GPUs, all while using the same power supply unit. He also mentioned that the system, located in his office room, is on another circuit from the garage's power, so the problem is certainly not likely to be an outside variable.

The observation at hand begs the question of just how valid the FCC's safety and electromagnetic interference rating approvals might be. We know that EM fields can do strange things, but as Skydive states, "[the card] has to be pushing acceptable levels by the FCC if it can jam your garage door remotes."

lol thats hilarious if true... but at the same time I wouldnt want my garage door opening up in the middle of the night just because I decided to fire up my gaming system... scary stuff

It will never open the door, just jam other devices from opening it.

On the other hand, that level of interference is pretty sick. (where did I put my tinfoil hat)

I get some mild interference with my 295s and my guitar amp. But definitely not as bad as this guy. :D

I can imagine military jammers using GeForce GTX 295 cards to jam enemy garages and prevent their tanks from gettting out lol

Just as a matter of coincidence (GTX "295") my security gate remote operates at 295MHz. Actually most gate-openers are in that 280-310MHz range. Given that the GTX 295 shaders are running at 1242 MHz, I guess it's possible that they're generating a harmonic at ~310MHz, but still amazing that it's strong enough to cause problems. At this point I would get a radio scanner and sweep through that frequency range to see what you pick up while the system is running. (I have a pair of Icoms I bought in Canada, so they have continuous frequency coverage from khz to 2-3GHz. Unlike the US models that have the cellular frequencies blocked... I've recorded my gate, garage, and car remotes just to see what their signals looked like, kinda cool.)

Someone fooled fudzilla again for the nTh time?

Its far from even plausible. Specially without radio emitting gear.

Plus any range with a theoretical frequency would be like 1m.

nvidia are not pleased and reported that in an update due soon....the hardware should be able also remotely start your car and put in gear...nvidia apologies for any inconvenience.

I only say Faraday cage, nothing more to say. :ROTF:

How is this news? My system partially jams my XM satellite radio but that doesn't mean it is "pushing acceptable levels by the FCC". I mean come on, this is sensationalism at its best and fear mongering at worst. All it means is that a garage door opener may be operating at the same frequency as the GTX 295's. It happens all the time with various electronics; especially when it comes to wireless signals.

The same thing can be said about how certain LCD TVs will interfere with IR remotes from satellite set-top boxes.

yeah everytime he cranks up ridge racer, it opens his doors.

this is total garbage, and totaly impossible, for reasons i really cant be bothered going into here, as this totaly doesnt even merit it.

but if you really want to debate my statement, about frequencys and intermodulation frequencys, then please PM me, and i should reply sometime next year

only on Fud ehh?

i would be very interested to find out how many other 'news sites' actualy quote this story though.

First the mixed metal 295 waterblock and now this. It looks like Fud has it out for EVGA. Are they trying to take the Nvidia-hating crown from the Inquirer?

reminds me of that line in Christmas Vacation.. "every time Karen would rev up the microwave I'd piss my pants and forget who I was for half an hour" ;)

so THATS why the gtx 295 is moving to a single PCB design!

Reminds me of back in the day. I had some GMRS radios that I'd use for short range communication, and any time I was close to a particular dual-slot machine with Celerons at 450MHz, the radios would start to RX random static. Kind of funny. :)

If he would have like 50 GTX295 running in his garage right between the door and the remote he might find someone who would believe the story, but as it is? no way.

I don't know about garage door openers, but my 295 with fan @ 100% certainly interferes. With my hearing, that is.

Fud = teh lol.

hmm, im gonna say it has something to do with the fact that the pc and the garage door opener are plugged into the same surge protector. lol
