View Full Version : IWork Trojan Horse May Be Turning Macs Into Zombies

Over the years, Mac users have been lucky enough that the word "zombie" only conjures up the shambling brain-craving hordes of the undead in movies like Shaun of the Dead...

Hey someone had to be that "guy".
As a famous man once said "Its time for CHANGE". For every person with a Mac excluding any hot chicks that I may hook up with in the future (always got to remember those people) I hope this virus burns when you pee and makes you realize that your OS and the OMG ALUMINUM case is nothing other then a waste of money and/or a very big paper weight that lights up.

exactly macs are like jesus, they die (get the worm, macs dont get viruses) go back to their maker (apple store) then come back as zombies (getting it back affter it gets reformatted) and phase in and out of being able to be contacted by humans (u know the more trips to the apple store since it will get on the writable recovery partition).

Everything is the straw man argument over there. Apple is good b/c it is!
It was only a matter of time before they became a target. Such n00bs!

Like viruses on Windows. It doesn't matter which OS the computer runs on when the user is stupid enough to install the virus. Software can be virus proof, but no software is idiot proof.
The reason why Linux is safe is the fact that people who use it usually know what they are doing and what they should not do(run unknown executables/files with root privileges). The reason why Windows is unsafe is the fact that people tend to run every possible file they can, be it .pif, .com, .bat, .scr or even .exe. They will blindly run it when there is a prompt saying "Free tits soon after you run this program".

viruses don't have anything to do with actually "installing" smth. try to connect a windows pc without router (hw firewall) and software firewall to the internet. you'll be infected with tons of stuff within just a few minutes.
furthermore, i don't get your logic of "Software can be virus proof, but no software is idiot proof.". if software were virus proof it would be idiot proof as well. without being idiot proof there's no way software can be virus proof :p:

Wow ok. Mister Logic here. Dude I dont care what kind of computer anyone runs cause I got my own. I could care less if you can get a virus or not. It is just fun to joke around with people.
First WHY IN HELL would I say a computer is Jesus???? Think about it.. hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

True.
But what I meant is that software IS NOT the problem. The problems are the IDIOT users. There is no way to make OS secure when there are idiots running every possible executable they can find.
Sure Windows machine with no security updates for last 7 years is going to be vulnerable. :p:
The hardware firewall won't do much for direct-hit attacks(known vulnerabilities), more for preventing remote machines for scanning vulnerabilities and preventing different kinds of DoS/DDoS attacks.

Mac has had viruses for a long time now. They just were not malicious to be noticed and are mostly trojans. You can look them up on hacker forums all the time. Just go to hackforums dot net and you will get a general consensus of it.

Mac's are tools like PC's. Based on same principles they can be infected as well. Some of us use mac's and AREN'T fanboys of apple simply this is a solution for OUR needs. Not all software is out for PC's. Am I saying it's not deserved? Not at all. Hell, mac and linux need a virus every now and then to kick some sense into stupid users. But to assume that EVERY mac user is a indie rock listening to hipster is retarded. Either way mac's have a place in the world and so do PC's.

That doesn't seem right... as I was running my desktop for 3 years with no firewall, and no anti-virus and never received a single virus. I ran anti-spyware programs every month or so and it would return maybe 10 hits at the very most. As long as you use common sense about surfing the internet, you're fine. Obviously, it's recommended that you have a firewall and anti-virus, but it's not a requirement to be safe from the internet...

aha, so you say, you DON'T have any of the mentioned programs installed but you're SURE to NOT have any viruses on your pc. wait a minute... HOW do you even know that you're not infected then? sry to be that harsh, but where do you know to have a clean system? it's not like a virus tells you on a sign "HEY, i infected your system, now go ahead and do online banking so i can get your account data". ;)
maybe your pc is a zombie as well, and you just don't know it.
you don't even have to open any browser or application to get infected with smth. just establish an internet connection and unpatched vulnerabilities do the rest. there were times a few years ago where a fresh install of winxp was infected with blaster & co within minutes of being online. sure, these old vulnerabilities are fixed by now, but there are always some kind of vulnerabilities an attacker could use...

lol, I see what you're saying. But yea, I never had any problems with any of my private information being stolen. I always check up on my bank account online and haven't seen any activity not initiated by me yet. :P
Maybe I'm just not popular enough to warrant attacks by hackers.
But yea, I don't have that desktop any more, I gave it to my brother after reformatting it and stuff at Spring Break. He's only 16 so he (that I'm aware of lol) doesn't have any reason to be inputting private information online.
I did scan it eventually (Symantec, this past summer) and it didn't come up with anything. My laptop has anti-virus for two reasons:
1) It's required by the University to maintain access to the internet in the dorms. And it's free...
2) It's my only computer here at the moment so I don't want something to happen and lose all my work for my Architecture classes.
EDIT: Now that I think about it, I was using ATT DSL those years and the modem was a 2-Wire modem and it also acted as the router (built-in wireless capabilities) and I believe it had a firewall built in because of it. So I guess I had a hardware firewall, but not a software firewall - I disabled my Windows Firewall because it wouldn't let me "share" the printer with the other computers in the house if it was on.

1. Windows, OS X, Linux, etc.. They are all safe to connect directly to the internet, as long as you don't have any programs that listen to ports and at the same time got a exploitable bug.
Having no firewall means more "doors" to the internet, it does't mean the doors are unlocked or weak.
2. Most virus problems today need user interaction. From time to time we have the badass remote-exploit viruses like Conficker, Blaster, etc.
But then again Conficker was patched in October last year?
A good example of idiot-virus are the ones on messenger. I always seem to get some random text and a link from some blond chick on my contact list, but never any of my IT friends. :(
