As indicated by the earlier story on HEXUS, AMD has cut the price of its current top-end desktop processor - the Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition.

AMD UK boss Andrew Buxton spoke exclusively to HEXUS.channel today to confirm that AMD had chopped around 18 percent off the cost of the 940 and made it clear that he thinks it measures up pretty well on a bang-per-buck basis.

"A cut of 18 percent on the previous price of the 940 represents a serious value proposition and makes it a strong contender to be the volume quad core processor of choice," said Buxton.

This price drop effectively makes the Phenom II 920 obsolete (they now cost roughly the same) and pretty much does the same for the Phenom II 810.

What also seems clear, but which Buxton couldn't comment on, is that AMD is making room for the Phenom II 955, which hasn't been launched yet but seems to be leaking out anyway.

The 3GHz 940 now seems to be positioned squarely against the newly launched 2.66GHz Intel Q8400 on price, while the 3.2GHz 955 may well be priced at the level of the 2.82GHz Q9550 or the 2.66GHz Core i7-920.
