I am currently budgeting a new computer, but it's been a while since I've been out of the loop. I've got a budget of 600-ish that I want to designate to the cpu, mobo, and ram. I'm not really sure whether to go between the Phenom II or the I7's right now.
I'm just looking to get back into gaming, however i really want to get into overclocking again. So please keep that in mind.
I really appreciate your guy's help.
Oh, and while we are at it, I'm looking at getting an hd 7850 x2 (mainly because i have a lot of money to blow, haha). Is there an argument for not getting that?

You will be hard-pressed to get some decent OCing RAM, and a good OCing motherboard for an i7 and stay under your $600 budget. At that point you are stuck with the Phenom II or a Core2 Quad.

6x2gb ocz platiunims 100 dollars + 300 dollars for the cpu=400 dollars you got 200 dollars to spend
i reccomend spending at least 300 dollars on your motherboard or getting cheaper ram 300 dollar mobo is a evga x58 sli vanilla or a dfi lp ut t3eh8
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227381 cheap after rebate
p6t is at 200 dollar but isnt a good ocer
so lets 76+288 cpu+ 300 mobo= 588+76=656 dollars your going to want a 300 dollar motherboard or you can get a ramapage gene but your not going to get good options for sound card mutliple gpu
the msi platniums are at 220 bucks and are decent should overclock pretty good but not the best
