Not knowing how Fugger has this place set up, there are means to make pretty much any site HA (High availability). I would be willing to help out where I can (I do network/security architecture primarily but also do work in system (and subsystem) design. Not that good w/ back-end database redundancy but I know we use oracle for similar multi-site or ha environments all the time for active/active (or cheaper databases that you have to manually switch).

But the guy has a point though, 2 weeks out of the air?
That is a LOT of downtime, too much for any site, that is only 96% availability during this year (and XS regularly goes down), so we can turn that 96% into 93%
Although that number seems high, it is a terrible number for availability. I thought XS had better systems, right now it looks like amateurs are at work.
They can test their bloody mac server before they use it for the entire forum.....
Plus, they have paying members, which makes matters worse

There is no paying members...some people have "donated" money to help out the overall cost of someone picking everything up themselves.
Just lay off the bit_ching for a while and just get back to what this is here for.
If you are not happy anymore, leave...if you like it, stay. Easy!
Come on everyone...let's just remember this is not somewhere that people owe you just because you come and post...this is a cyber community that is impressive to say the least. And if you want to talk about utilisation, then 93% is exceptional for any business.

Cost is not the point. A site like XS should have backup in place. I know I have enjoyed and learnt a lot in these forums where I lurk often and contribute little. That's kinda the point. Why bother running 25 miles of a marathon and blow off the last 1.6? Getting some redundant hardware, keeping an effective backup system, and testing changes in a development environment before rolling them into Production are very basic and would save a lot of downtime and admin stress.

The point I'm making here is if you have proper hosting or a backup plan you wouldn't have these issues..
XS has been up and down a lot the last year.. sometimes for a few hours and sometimes for days..

Most of the whines come from newer users. Look at their join dates, and some have ponied up the 25 to help out.
5 years with nary a major issue till now, good record methinks. Imagine the cost for a datacenter with XS bandwidth. You ready for 'wanna read here? Pay here' for everyone.
Give Fugger a break and be happy this place is here. There is NO replacement for XS. If it goes down, all these experts we look as gods will be scattered to the winds.

It's not always that easy. People have lives outside this forum. If it were his job to sit here and keep this site operating, then yes. Otherwise i think he's doing quite fine. Anyone that gets pissed about the down time should start their own website with 99,653 members and generate 3,609,692 posts then come back and let us know how easy it is.

anyone doing that on his own is not acting responsibly sorry. Involving 100.000 members and keeping managing the forum's server on your own with no down time and data loss once in a while is impossible. No other site does that. And also, I wouldn't be so upset if I didn't know there was no alternative to XS. Not the first time I'm saying this: there are no other forum that can compete with XS. I don't want to offend or attack Fugger, I'd like him to get XS hosted, just to avoid that what just happened happens again ;)

glad to hear that  XS wouldn't be what it is without people like you (I registered here after following your "rainmaker" build as a guest). So excuse me people, but thanking Fugger again and again because the site is back online is getting ridiculous, when the site should never have been offline in the first place. So you should stop bashing those who complain with reasons (ie those who actually make XS) and also stop worshiping the inaccessible/invisible hero responsible for this mess
Polite Troll is Polite.
Look Logos I call em as I see em. You're a Troll and your obvious infatuation with a few builders doesn't make you special. You're constant carping from thread to thread about the management of the Forum is basically Trolling. A collection of your posts on the topic would make for a medium-sized Wiki of discontent.
Your desire to engage in polite combat is still combative. You are a Troll...a polite Troll...but a Troll.

ridiculous and useless post :D why did you come to post here for today by the way
Didn't bother me...maybe I am not paying attention. I don't notice anything significant missing...I'm here now right? :p:...if that's not called infatuation and trolling ...or may be just stupidity hey, see I'm not always that polite ;)

ok guys, seriously no personal attacks over this, please.
XS is going to get fixed, its not gonna get hosted and we are not gonna have to start dealing with add banners again (hosting is expensive)

anyone doing that on his own is not acting responsibly sorry.
So you think it's free to run a site like this? The volume of data and bandwidth this site consumes is nothing many of the people :banana::banana::banana::banana:ing would even remotely understand.
I love how most of the ":banana::banana::banana::banana:ers" demand this site be online for your enjoyment yet you aren't giving anything back other than grief. Also, he doesn't charge a cent for you to post here so all of this content is 100% his property. He can shut the site down tomorrow, sell it to a marketing firm and walk away if he wants to, not a dam thing anyone of us can do about it.
How about offering support and be part of the solution instead of being part of the problem?

Rackspace is roughly 15 dollars per U.
1 Amp of power is roughly 30 dollars.
Bandwidth for a mix (Level3, XO, Global Xing, Cogent, Sprint) about 15 per meg.
I'd say to run this website would cost about 150 month.

XS connection 10 meg up and down + 3 servers each has Dual quad (last time FUGGER talked about specs) so it has to be more than 300$ a month if you considered the hardware depreciation .

3 servers? Doesn't make sense. Wonder if they are trying to do some redundancy but its not working correctly.
out of that 10 meg connection, I doubt they max it out. I bet its closer to about 5-6megs tops. You can pretty easily get a 5 meg commit with a 100 meg ceiling. dual quads pull about 1 amp of power at idle. I dont know much for the macs, but a Supermicro dual quad pulls about 1 amp at idle not much more at load. My datacenter in dallas runs a GB feed from each one of my providers. Mind you I only commit to 400 megs total, but I'm able to burst to around 5GB

Does anyone here actually know what happened? Also, is any attempt being made to recover the lost data?

no, from what I know, one or two weeks are lost for good. This said anything can happen, as not much has been officially told.

yes, at the contrary of what I thought earlier today, today's post won't be lost as there shouldn't be any attempt to recover what's actually lost (with a more recent backup). So XS is just up and running "normally" now.

But the guy has a point though, 2 weeks out of the air?
That is a LOT of downtime...
What if it was forever ? What do you guys who complain have to do with it ? Yep, nothing ! They owe us NOTHING.
Ohhh you are banned already :yepp:

It's only happened a few times, i've learned that PEOPLE ARE NEVER HAPPY esp. on the internets. There is a rollercoaster forum that i visit where the site operators go to theme parks and post pictures/videos. A few times the forum members would start whining and whining about getting the video of some new ride or whatever, while the operator is on a trip who knows where, has to go through a million photos to post an update and people just whine and whine, they want it now!
Also i am reminded of downloading movie torrents and reading the comments where people say "You took out the director's commentary!!" whaaaaaaaaaa, you're already getting the damn thing for free!:shakes: Though i stopped doing that stuff since i got Netflix.............

As much as i like XS, i got to admit that it has by VERY VERY far the worst downtime compared to any site i have ever visited on a regular basis and it's been that way pretty much since i registered

we don't really know, but don't get your hope up.
just repost what is missing and move on...
and i probably wouldn't mess around with database integration for now or any other upgrades resulting in something else messing up...
