View Full Version : forceing old drivers

What I do to get the driver to work is first I have winzip installed. This way you can take the setup exe and right click on it, now hoover over the winzip and click on 'extract to folder'. This should give you all the contents including inf folder.
Now go for an update driver for your vid card, do 'have disk', direct the update to the inf folder of the new driver and click on it. Now you'll see a list card models, if it is a old driver you may only see up to 9700 card. You can acually click on that card. It will give a warning that it wasn't made for your card, have it install it anyway. After reboot you'll see that it shows your card as a 9700 in this case.
To fix this,, before installing the driver you go into the inf folder and open both the C2 and CX inf files. Look for any where it shows 9700 and retype it to read the name of your card, like "RADEON 9800 XT" save all that. Now you do the update only this time you will see the "RADEON 9800 XT" in the list and not 9700, click on that one. It will do the same thing saying it's no good,,install it anyway:)

Took me forever to write this:D

OPP: Which driver do you use for 3DMark2001?

I'll soon have a 9800Pro, will it differ from the XT when it comes to drivers?

Well I have corrupt textures in certain games using the 3.8/3.9 drivers.

Just installed the 3.5's back on using OPP's guide :D

Charlie, what do you mean? I found that pretty easy to follow :p:

Be nice, Paddy!
Come on! Help a guy out!!
Something like: First install driver 3.9 with Control Panel, go to Display Properties>Adapter>Properties>Driver>Update driver.
Load WinZip and ......

like that!!!

Charlie, I'll have a go, but don't hold your breath. :p:

1. Extract the driver files, either run the .exe and cancel installation and then go into the folder it creates on your C:, or right click the .exe and select Extract here (requires Winzip installed).

2. Open up the folder containing the driver, and find and open the C2 and CX .inf files, and replace all instances of 9700 Pro to read RADEON 9800 XT (or the exact name of your card).

3. Open [Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager], and bring up the properties for your Radeon, click the [Driver] tab, and click [Update Driver], then select the option to install from a specified location, and direct the dialog to your folder containing the extracted drivers.

The rest should be self explanatory, just leaving you to install the Control Panel.

If this doesn't work out to be entirely correct, I would just like to say that I'm typing it at work, without a machine I can test the procedure on, so it'll probably be a little off here and there, it should work though, I hope. :D

So once I have the corrected C2.inf and CX.inf files stuck in a folder (named what? and do they have to be in a folder?) I just direct the update to this and these 2 files are the ONLY thing it needs to update driver?? This sux....

Maybe it'd be easier to edit the .inf files on a separate computer, save to cdrom and specify update driver to d:/

??
Anyone want to email me the corrected files in a folder to update :D

Ok I got this to work but my score droped 300pts with no other changes but switching to the Cat 3.2's. Do you have to run the control panel with the same Cat's? Charlie, Opp you may want to give these drivers a try there not the 3.9's but were included with the install cd of my 9800XT here the driver revison # 6.14.10.6378 and it say's they were built on 8/12/2003

charlie

Cowpuppy,
I've tried all 3 XT drivers...install CD (worst), 3.8's and 3.9's (best)
I got 250 points from going to cat 3.1 w/3.1cp. Try it again! Make sure you uninstall 3.9.

I have that problem too, when I point the update to the -inf's nothing appears in the list of hardware, it's empty...

you need to install some new driver first..then select 'update driver' and then do what OPP did there and it should work. :)
