Could a 4850 1GB be overclocked to a 4870 1GB levels?
How about a 4850 512MB OC'd to 4870 512MB levels?
How much impact does the DDR5 vs DDR3 memory have on total perfomance of raising the core clocks? I am assuming the DDR5 is used on the 4870 to minimize any bottlneck effect from the 256 bit memory.
So because of the 256 bit memory is it safe to say 4850 can never come close to 4870 in performance no matter what the core clock is raised to?

i would imagine you could easily overclock to the 4870 1GB Clocks better cooling means better overclock what res are you gaming at ?
I read the answer to this question on this very forum just yesterday, but now I can't seem to find the thread to link to. Anyway, someone clocked a 4850 and 4870 to the exact same speeds and found a 5-10% difference in performance. So yes, the 4870 is better, but when applying an overclock to a 4850 it certainly doesn't seem to be bottlenecked by the GDDR3. I don't know what games/benchmarks were used though, sorry.

without AA they should be really close at similar core clock speed,or you can increase the core speed on 4850 to compensate for the 5-10% performance delta unless the game is really heavy on memory bandwidth.xbit's review of 4850 overclocked to 750/1200 shows that with AA applied in games the 4850 is a bit slower but in games like stalker w/16AF only they are very close in performance.

GDDR5 makes a big impact over GDDR3 (proven by many reviews), thats mainly why the 4870 is like 20%+ faster than the 4850. You cant make up for that by OC'ing.
You can just close the gap tho....With GPU and a lil mem OC.
