Hello everyone. Is 30ms response time that bad? I'm asking because i've been eyeing a 15" s-ips qxga panel, but the response time is scaring me., but is it really that bad? I don't know. Will i get stuttering when i move my mouse when i play games and such?

Thanks

Never experienced it but from what i've read anything above 20ms shouldn't be used for gaming, i'd like to see for myself though. Apparently not all LCD panels are measured equally in this regard

The only real way to know is pit it up against a CRT monitor to test for lag. [H] Forums are really popular at discussing LCD VS CRT lag. They usually keep up to date with the latest monitor trends. I have a 24" S-IPS at supposedly 16ms response time. I believe a lag a little bit maybe 2-4 frames at most. I used to game on a 16ms TN panel and it was fine, also gamed on a 20" S-PVA panel with 16ms response time. But 30ms is a lot of lag time. But if you really want good response time and a good screen plus good color, get a S-PVA or M-VA panel. If you need speed, get a TN panel. Nothing beats a TN for response time, well maybe until OLED comes out or if you buy a 120HZ monitor.

this is the lcd in question. quite pricey though, but good for diy projector XD http://agilentpixel.com/product.php?id_product=23

edit:did more reading and 30ms is unbearable. 30ms=33.33hz, which when i vsync= 33 fps max,which is fail.

30ms is nothing special, most LCDs fall within this range of average measured response.

Do not confuse the real numbers with the advertised specs on a product - they are no where near the same.

My BenQ FP241W does not ghost in any 3D game no matter how fast and it supposedly has an average response time of 25-35ms.

There is a lot more to the story.

so the datasheets specs from samsung and other panel manufactuers are lies? (technical info, not broshure)

They are not lies, just measured differently. The numbers they give do not represent actual real-world use. They are only measuring grey to grey pixel switching response.

Have a look here:

Heh yeah i suspected something like this, it's the same as contrast levels being measured differently, marketing 101.

I think you have pixel response time and image response time confused.

I thought this might come up. I am trying to say that there is a lot more to the story than advertised response time, which means little.

I havent seen a single monitor that advertises image display latency yet.

The displayed advertised pixel response time is usually 2-12ms which implies that the discussion is about is image display latency.

It's worth repeting that advertised pixel response times are a huge pile of bull anyways... I've read a "15 LCD gaming monitors" review and the conclusion was that pretty much all manufacturers lie. Example: Monitor A had advertised response of 4 ms - which is really good, measured was 25 ms >.> Comparing such numbers is pointless. Same goes for brightness, contrast and so on

Short Answer: Yes

Long Answer: Anything > 10ms is horrible by today's standards.
