ok, here it goes :)

http://zslip.com/

this is the site for the apps. they have both cpu and gpu optimized apps for it.

if i miss anything, let me know and ill edit this to reflect the new info.

for the CPU:

windows x86 and x64 is version 0.19
what you need to do is check cpu-z and find out what your highest SSE.
under the downloads click on the SSE you need and download it

win_0.19_SSE*.zip

unzip it, then just copy the files to the data directory.
By default this data directory can be found at:
Win2k/XP: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\BOINC\
Vista: C:\ProgramData\BOINC\
i dont know what it is for Win7
they are a hidden file so you need to see it.

thats it. just make sure you abort wahtever WU you are on, exit out of BOINC, copy the files, restart it and there you go

it droped my lappy T7200 from 33 min a WU to 24min :)

so happy crunching everyone :D

For the GPU, this is where the fun begins

it ONLY works on ATI 38xx, and 48xx and firestream 9200

first you need to have ati cat 8.12 installed. the later versions will work, but you have to rename some files and its not as stable as the 8.12

download version 0.19e, just mouse over either the win32_SSE2, or Win64
or you can try the ATI GPU Optimized Application

extract the zip file and copy it to the same folder
By default this data directory can be found at:
Win2k/XP: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\BOINC\
Vista: C:\ProgramData\BOINC\

close Boinc before you do this, copy the files, restat boinc and your done :)

on a 4870 ppl are averging 50k points a day :)

lol your results will hopefully be better :D

Skycrane. Are these apps widely used? I remember similar used to be used for Boinc in rosetta. actually I probably still have Crunch3r's optimized files on my Data Store drive. :D

For Vista I copied the.19e zip files to:

Vista: C:\ProgramData\BOINC\projects\milkway.cs.rpi.edu

Also, the zip file has a folder like win64 that contains the files. I copied the just contents of the win64 folder to the milkway folder.

they are supported by the milkyway team on thier official forum page. and they are the only way to get the gpu running. if you look at the top 100 producers, i gurantee at least 90% of them are using the GPU apps

it looks like they are a team of a few programers that are doing it at RPI. they started out doing just cpu optis, then got a new student that started working on the gpu and she has been doing most of that :)

hey glennpat, how do you keep your rig updated with wu all the time ?? i finally got mine up and running monday, but it would run through the all the wu boinc downloaded in about a minute... do you know of a way to have boinc dowload like 300 wu at a time??

hey glennpat, how do you keep your rig updated with wu all the time ?? i finally got mine up and running monday, but it would run through the all the wu boinc downloaded in about a minute... do you know of a way to have boinc dowload like 300 wu at a time??

I do have my HD4830 on a quad core system and told Boinc to use all 4 cores. Since I am running the GPU it doesn't really use them, but it allows it to have 24 WUs. The project has a limit of 6 WU per core.

I also am running a bat file that will cause boinc to do an update every 5 minutes. The bat file is placed in the Boinc folder and then execute it.

:start
boinccmd --project http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/ update
ping 127.0.0.1 -n 2 -w 1000 > nul
ping 127.0.0.1 -n 300 -w 1000> nul
goto start

It took me a few hours to figure out how to do the above. The 300 is the 300 second wait. It's a cludgee way to do a wait but I found it on the internet. The DOS in vista no longer supported a wait via the Change command.

There has been a lot of discussion on the milkyway forum about doing a script that does an update, but there has been no direction that I have seen from the project on the subject. I bought the card just for milkyway and decided I didn't want to let it idle too much. I'll do what ever the projects says to do or not do, but until then I will run the script. I noticed when reading their forum yesterday someone said that they had posted an update script, but I did not run across it.

It still runs out of work, but gets around the problem of Boinc not handling things very well when WUs only take a minute to do. Sometimes Boinc would wait over 2 hours before even trying to get work.

I found this thread about automatic updates: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=136439&highlight=batch+file

I've been running this with WCG and they seem to not like each other.
When WCG is running MilkyWay doesn't, but when I run SETI cpu version MilkyWay runs with SETI no problems
Anybody else experience this?

I am not sure if running on the GPU site is working and have not looked into it. I am running my ATI GPU (HD4830) on the reqular site http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/. For this need to used the method descibed earlier in the thread. I also believe I am using the .19f version of the code that needs to be download.

thanks for your help,

ok this is what i have done , i know im doing somthing wrong

ive attached to the reqular site http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/.

then exited boinc>downloaded ati_0.19f_win64 and extracted files and copyed to ProgramData\BOINC\>projects>milkyway.cs.rpi.edu_milkyway folder

also because im on win 7 64 bit and cat 9.6 i went into system32 folder and renamed 3 files

amdcalcl64.dll from aticalcl64.dll
amdcaldd64.dll from aticaldd64.dll
amdcalrt64.dll from aticalrt64.dll

then restarted boinc , it has then downloaded tasks and started working but it looks like its just working on my cpu not my gpu

What you did looks correct, but check your ProgramData\BOINC\>projects>milkyway.cs.rpi.edu_milkyway folder to make sure all three files were extracted to there.

When I start up BOINC in the message area after the "No coprocessor" line I get:

Milkway@home (time of day) Found app_info.xml; using anonymous platform

I don't see this message on yours. app_info is one of the extracted files.

Good Luck!

Glenn

It looks like it may be working ok. The way to tell how many are actually running on the GPU is to look at the progress column. The default is set to 3. Mine will always show more running then what really is. You do have a lot, but could be because other project is suspended.

I have been having some issues where my other projects sometimes are only running on 3 cpu cores instead of 4. I got it back to 4 by changing the avg_ncpus to .05 from .1 in the app_info.xml. I just found this out yesterday and am still learning how these options work.

yep i think i got it going, it takes about 1 minute to do 1 task, started off only doing 3 tasks at once and i opened app_info.xml and chaned it to n8 and it started doing 8 at once then i started wcg and now its doing 5 mw and 3 wcg, max temp on gpu is 75c

and yep i need to work out how to use the codes , i got alot to learn
edit.... or i could be wrong its doing 8 mw and 8 wcg tasks at once , i dunno it keeps changing

I signed up for Milky GPU too. "Feeder down" means they aren't assigning any work to it and from reading the forums it looks like they might abandon the sub-project before it starts.

Another observation, the SSE4.1 opt app for Linux gave me 100% computational errors. Wiped the drive and installed XP64 with the SSE4.1 app for Windows and it worked fine.

They created the http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway_gpu/ site when they were having trouble on the regular site suppying enough work for the GPU cards. A couple of weeks ago they figured something out and now there is no problem getting work units on the regular site. On a HD 4830 I get about 50,000 points per day. Not bad for a $80 cards.

The _GPU sub-project mentioned support for CUDA which interested me. All my current output is the old fashioned CPU type. ;)

Not sure if anyone was following, but CUDA (read: NVIDIA cards) is been worked on for MW@home. Its on their forums. They have code released... I went to give it a try but get errors.

http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/forum_thread.php?id=906

EDIT: Ok... I got it beyond the early hurdles and of course my G80 card is not 1.3 capable. But I'm sure some of you guys have G200 etc. :) Just remember to download the 32bit CUDA Toolkit for Windows, regardless if you have a 64bit OS.

No. Just download the *zip, and go into the bin folder. Then fire up a command line and follow the instructions in the readme link. It seems that you have to make the stars.txt, astronomy.txt and the other xxxx.txt file from command line. After that it should work.

http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/download/code_release/readme

Requirements:

CUDA 2.2 Toolkit and appropriate driver (version number only, doesn't matter if the driver is 32 or 64 bit) listed on NVIDIA's website[1]
-Windows users need to use the 32 bit version of the toolkit
-Linux/GNU users can choose based on which version of the executable they will use
-If you are using a 32 bit executable you need a 32 bit toolkit and likewise for 64 bit
GTX 200 Series/CUDA 1.3 Support

Navigate to the bin/test_files folder, there will be two helper utilies
set_parameters.sh (For Linux/GNU)
set_parameters.bat (For Windows)
they each accept a command line parameter of either 20,21,79,82, or 86, corresponding the the numbers appended after the filenames in the directory. Run the helper program in order to generate the input files for executable.

In the folder bin/test_files there will be three executables:
milkywayGPU_0.19_i686.exe - Windows 32 Bit (also works on 64 bit)
milkywayGPU_0.19_i686-pc-linux-gnu - Linux/GNU 32 Bit (also works on 64 bit)
milkywayGPU_0.19_x86_64-pc-linux-gnu - Linux/GNU 64 Bit
After generating the input files from the step above all that needs to be done is executing the executable. It should generate some debug infomation in the beginning looking something like this:

Device from command line was -1
Found 2 CUDA cards
Found a GeForce GTX 285
Device can be used it has CUDA 1.3 support
Found a GeForce 8800 GTX
Device cannot be used, it does not have CUDA 1.3 support
Chose device GeForce GTX 285

and then the computation will continue, it takes around 90 seconds to execute on a GTX 285. The final output will resemble something like: (for ./set_parameters 20)

background_integral: 0.000471902457354592304306084571, stream_integral[0]: 10.713115282597781785511870111804, stream_integral[1]: 513.270626572620471961272414773703
gpu__integral_kernel3 took 85914.695312 ms
gpu__likelihood_kernel took 3301.745117 ms
likelihood: -2.985311281290878415717315874645

If not, please check the file stderr.txt for any error messages.

Hey guys,

so I thought I was gonna try my 4870X2 again, since folding doesn't really work. I downloaded the latest files, did the workaround for newer catalysts (I am on 9.9) and it seems to work on GPU 0, one WU is done in like 30s or so, LOL.
But the 2nd GPU is doing nothing - any way to get it to work on 2 GPUs? I have the latest beta boinc client, but without the modded milkyway app it wouldn't even download WUs for the GPU.

Edit: Belay that.. it is now working on both GPUs, with absolutely ridiculous performance. Ludicrous speed, in Mel Brooks words. Is this even allowed? lol

Sorry for double post, but this is just too ridiculous:

http://database.he-computer.de/Bilder/temp/milkyway.jpg

My stock 4870X2 is kicking out approx 2 WUs per minute, and it's not even at full blast.. CCC shows 80% load for GPU 0 and 99% fpr GPU 1.

No idea if I should be happy or sad now.. BOINC points are entirely worthless and uncomparable when there's stuff like this out  :shakes:

Edit: This isn't even the best part yet. I just checked and GPU 1 was running on 2D clocks :ROTF:
So I just raised both to 800/900 shader/mem.. guess what, 47s for 2 WUs. :ROTF:

I just did a rough guesstimate of the PPD.. looks like this will get me like 200k BOINC rac if I keep it running   :shakes: :p:

No. His screenshot shows his WCG WU's going aswell... but obviously on the CPU. We'd here about it in the WCg section otherwise. :) Milkyway@Home is a completely diff project.

So, rip - anything on the usefulness of this project? It certainly seems to do well on ATI, even if the PPD it claims are ridiculously over the top.
Anybody else doin it? I still feel like I'm cheating

I'm biased as I'm an amateur Astronomer. :D Collatz is another project that the high end ATI's do very well... but the 295's do very well also.

Speaking of, I just installed milkyway on another machine that was idling an HD4850 :wasntme:
Happy to report this works without any issues. Different catalyst on there, a little older (9.6 I think), machine is controlled via VNC, so no screen on it - and it works, almost as fast as on the 4870's.

Refreshing to see ATI + GPGPU actually WORK for a change

Did I mention I am gonna pick up a 5870 later today? :D :D :D

Also, I just attached Milkyway on a machine with 2x GTX 280. SLI activated. Guess what.. no need to do anything, it detects the GPUs, downloads stuff, and runs without me doing anything.
BUT it's relatively slow, 3 minutes per WU per GPU. Means the ATIs are 4x faster in this

Edit: I just posted a thread over at milkyway forums to let ppl know of my initial results. If anyone is interested, read here (http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/forum_thread.php?id=1186#32076)

Fired back. He obviously is too full of himself to admit to anything though :p:

Why is it that ALL these DC people are :banana::banana::banana::banana:s, no matter what project or forum you go to? They just can't take any form of criticism...

Well... if they follow the rules.... the rules say something like per day on a 400MHz P3(I think) = 100 Credits. So, for example if the P3 can do 4WU's in a day, then Credit = 24/WU. :) That is the Boinc guidlines. And I thinkMW@home are doing this... and they are not inflating anything.

Well if they aren't then WCG is granting only 1/10th of what they should.

After seeing that I wasn't using the "F" version for my ATI cards I managed to make it work ... this is crazy!!!! !!! Look at those 4890s FLY :). Joined the team too :)>

Thats a matter for WCG and their individual credit system. Some of these project apps have been handcoded in Assembly for maximum punch. I know Collatz has. And since Gipsel and crunch3r work on the code for both you can then see how they have been optimized to take good advantage of modern processors. For example in Collatz 64bit OS will give you double performance because of the way its coded. (app deals with massive numbers so this makes sense that 32bit is a limiting factor). Also there are optimized apps for to take advantage of SSE. WCG IIRC does not utilize any SSE instruction sets? Again this is a matter for WCG, and the individual project developers... and its a matter for ALL of the other projects.

I've seen countless debates on credits over the years.... and I can understand guys been angry spendin $$$$ on dual gainstowns, or Harpers, only to have them pounded by a couple of GPU's.

The other side is, BOINC may need to update their credit framework. A P3 is old tech... and misses many of the instruction sets and has lower cache. Maybe updating the framework for a days crunching on a C2D...?

That's not even my issue. I couldn't care less about who has or gets more credits, I (we) crunch because we believe in it. I would still crunch HCC if I got 1 credit per WU

Problem is, most people will participate for the points, which is what they're there for in the first place.

What does make me angry is the thought that due to the extreme imbalance between BOINC projects, some people might chose to quit crunching WCG in favor of running another project that will net them moar points

Otherwise I wouldn't even bother getting agitated over credits.

.

Again this is the fault of the kredit Kops and their strive for points equivalence among projects. So it means that, for the most part (but not completely) one noob can show off his zillion points in one project and compare it with another guy on another project with less points and count himself higher. Point equivalence = fail. You cannot compare different applications and try to logically make comparisons. its like 2 guys comparing machines on the basis of one guys SPi result and the other guys 3dmark result. That is what it boils down to, and is yet another reason why i loathe Boinc, its framework and all the :banana::banana::banana::banana::banana:s that populate their many many forums. *sigh* Reminds of the flamewars I used to get involved with in Rosetta when me and haltech would bomb their forum. :D:D

i am almost 100% sure boinc credits are gigaflops*10 so 200k ppd would be 2 teraflops, which is quite fast. its hilarious to see 1 gpu match 30 cpu's in processing power, even more efficient too. gpu's ftw.

just think riptide, if there were no flamewars on forums, what else would we do??? lol :D

oh yes, btw, im back ........
