View Full Version : Bricked board by using BIOS defaults?

System specs: Asus P5K Premium, Intel E8500, 4 gigs GSkill RAM, 760w Fortron PSU, 8800 GTS...

Last night, I wanted to do some benching/gaming at stock settings (wanted to see if a problem with a game would occur at stock settings) so I went into the BIOS and backed up my settings with the OC profile, then I just hit 'load default settings'. Saved and went to reboot, PC rebooted, and then turned off. No biggie I figured, cold boot bug, seen it many times. However the computer never powered back on. I've also seen this happen a couple of times and usually by unplugging the power cord and then replugging it will power back on. Not this time.

So I disconnected everything, removed the CMOS battery, and used the jumper to clear CMOS. Plugged it back up and still it wouldn't power on. I'm not sure how I could have killed the board by loading defaults in BIOS, but it's starting to look that way. The power supply is working and the lights on the board come on (which I think means it's getting power) but it will absolutely not power on.

Any suggestions on reviving this sucker or should I just cut my losses?

try leaving the cmos out for 24 hours.

Set your ram voltage to what its rated for??? Try booting with one stick.

In hindsight, it was naive to load default settings, but I figured it would be the quickest method to get back to stock versus adjusting each setting manually.

It occurred to me afterward that maybe the ram is being undervolted now, but the computer should at least be powering on? I mean, it should still fire up and attempt a POST without ANY ram installed, so I wouldn't think that would be the culprit here.

Correct me if I'm wrong, as I've never had undervolted ram problems.

yeah, it should try post you just won't get anywhere. You should at least hear a bios beep or something if you got speakers.

Yup correct should keep beeping at you. I would try with one stick, or if you have some other ram like a 1gig stick you could try.

That's what I thought. Like I said though, it's not turning on. Nada. The lights on the board do come on, but that's it, no other signs of life. I'll try leaving the battery out for 24 hours and using one stick but I have a feeling she's a goner. I just don't understand how essentially loading failsafe defaults can kill a board. Maybe it's just a coincidence and it just died from good ole hardware failure.

For anyone that cares..

Yep, it's bricked.

I even tried removing the CPU, video, and RAM and attempting a bare board POST (suggested by ASUS tech supp). Still no power.

PSU is fine, tested it with PSU tester and paper clip.

Tried clearing CMOS again (although, that sets the BIOS to defaults, which is exactly what I did to cause this) and of course still no power.

Had to RMA the board.
