my mars board has 2 pcie x16 slots
but when the first pcieX16 slot is occupied with vid card ..the 2nd slot turns into a pcieX4 slot ! need it to be a X8 slot at least because just got a Adaptec2405 raid card and it's a X8 card

the Adaptec 2405 will work in a X4 slot but with less results really sux !

really hate to put my 3870X2 card into the 2nd slot working at pcie X4

any way to mod the board or bios to make the 2nd slot work at X8 ????

I highly doubt that this would be a feasible mod. Not that it can't be done in any way. I suspect that you would have to influence some sort of multiplexer onboard that splits the lanes. I'd say that it would probably take so much time that buying a board that fits your needs would be the better option.
But that's just my :2cents: and maybe I'm wrong. ;)

the nb/sb only has x amount of pci e lanes. its not a mod you could even attempt on your own

That was clear. And that's why it's "only" 16x and 4x. The question was whether or not it would be possible to make it 8x and 8x for example. And that is not impossible and some manufacturers have shown that. Isn't there a P35 based board with dual 8x PCIe slots (Asus made it, IIRC).

BUT, as I said, it would take some time to reverseengineere the way the splitting of the lanes is implemented right now on your board and then think of a good solution to do it differently.

It sure is not as easy as any Vmod. ;)

What are you running on that card? PCIe 1.0 x4 provides 1GB/s in both directions.

Aside from this, many motherboards' BIOSes provide options to manually setup the lane splitting when applicable.

most boards that have a 4x lane and a 16x lane. the 4x slot are 4x electrical meaning only a 4th of the slot will have pins. and the rest of the slot will be empty. yes there was a p35 board board with 8x 8x lanes but didnt those boards have a pci e bridge chip? the asus blitz series i think there where called.

And exactly that is the reason why I wrote that it probably wasn't worth it. Adding such a bridge chip wouldn't be impossible for sure, but it also wouldn't be a walk in the park.

And BTW:

I'm sorry to say but that is just plain wrong.
Do you really think that they would make special 16x slots for that purpose?
What they do is take a normal 16x slot, but just connect the contacts for 4x. The rest is soldered in, but NC.

well thank you all !

figured it couldnd be modded

but on the good side the adaptec raid card does actullay work in the X4 slot :) in case anyone else wanted to know

probbly is limited thier to 2 maybe 3 drives but gussing that 4 drives would suffer
using 2 drives the few benches eye have run shows the same results in the 1st or 2nd slot
really hurts my 3870X2 being in the 2nd slot tho :ROTF:

so till my other 2 ssd's show up it's staying in the 2nd slot

thank you all big time saveing me even more searching  but as uasual got to learn something along the way :D
