I think he is asking how do you know if it is a C1 or E0 batch chip. Simple, look on the outside of the box. You will see the batch fpo#

A C1 batch will be SLAWQ
A E0 batch will be SLB8V

Hey Mike (hope you don't mind I call you this way?) I just tried and searched the internet for you. There's not much information available, but looks like the L822 batch belongs to the C1 stepping - check this out (http://forums.pcper.com/showthread.php?t=458485).

One way to help you find the E0-stepping Q9550: check the Pack Date on the box. Any date before September 2008 should still be a C1 chip. But it's a mix bag after September 2008. So like someone said you will also have to remember to look for the s-Spec code on the box -- SLB8V. Hope this helps you find the right chip.

EO are better;) lower voltage normal ocing is way better on a EO, and my EO q9550 is 2nd place with only a SS phase at -30c not ln2 and only 1.46vcore:D
