The Intel Atom N280 is finally out. You can read a review of the 1000HE here (http://www.technightly.com/gadgets/reviews/eee1000he/review.html).
Any XS members going to jump on one of these and OC it? I realize it is a somewhat ridiculous chip to overclock, but hey, that's half the fun of it. :D

Yeah, that's what I was hoping for from the first generation, it's a shame
that we only got so far in a year and a half (or thereabouts). In the end
I got tired of waiting and jumped on a deal for a used Vaio TX3.
The thing is, Atom may be energy-efficient, but my Vaio TX3 with a
Core Solo and a smaller (57Wh std) battery manages more: 7.5-8hrs
estimate with wifi and half brightness, and 11-12hrs estimate with
wifi and backlight off. (Not to mention, that there is even a larger
battery available (13000mAh instead of the std 7800mAh) for it, which
is said to last (over) 12hrs with wifi on...)
Now what I want to say is that: if this normal cpu-based notebook
can get longer battery life, then they are (intentionally) messing
up something with the Atom. Atom should have much lower consumption
and a longer battery life, but netbooks based on it don't have. This is
quite disappointing.

@Frank M
Are you running winxp as well? I find that the battery meter can sometimes lie! Like it'll say I have 4h40mins @100% battery life on my works IBM R60e, but with light usage (no wifi) I usually see around 3h30mins.
Maybe this is the case with your Sony Vaio  and what could be more worrying the same case with that Asus. Maybe that only gets like 6hours

Reviews say this thing gets 7 hours of real battery life easy. That Vaio laptop Frank was talking about sounds cool though, wish it was still being made. It's not secret that the old Intel 945G SE chipset being used in current netbooks is a major drain. Poulso (US15W) helps some, and gives video decode assist, but it actually performs worse in some areas (like 3D). GN40 and GeForce 9400M will improve performance but use even more power. The only significant power reduction will be Pineview, but that'll have largely the same performance issues. Either way any real successor to the 945G SE is still a long ways away in actually netbooks.

Yeah, that's been my experience with it. Still, 7 hours isn't bad by any means. I need to play around with some of the power settings in XP to see if I can get a bit more battery life out of this thing.

It's not Atom, it's the 945G chipset sucking up the power.

I've yet to find a netbook that is precisely what I want. The Asus N10 is the closest so far, with an HDMI port on a 10" notebook.
