Hey,
i would like to know if this configuration would permit me to make a good overclocking. i didnt bought it, and would like too (who doesnt want to !!) so plz help me :)

athlon 64 FX51

MB EPoX 8HDA3+ Socket 754 or ABIT KV8-MAX3

Memory 1024 Mo DDR PC4000 OCZ

Mach II (cant for the rofl, dont have a good knowledge with the subject)

ATI RADEON 9800 XT

2 HardDisk Raptors 36 Go (actually i dont know if i take 2 of 36 or 2 of 74 knowing that the 74 one has better performance and has more space, but is more expensive,, and the 36 one has a good price and is not too big (lol never "too" but anyway) knowing that i got a DVDWriter so  ) )

that was my first question, second one is :

once i got that, (for i hope a price around 2000 € , if less tell me where), would it be simple for an Xtrem newb to make a good overclocking ? i know a few bases but thats all, i know like fsb vcore and stuff but only that,,
if no, can anybody tell me where can i learn more ?

i got this website with the faq : ocfaq.com for the time being
anyway, just waiting for your answers and i apologize for my bad english : i am french (erf i know)

edit : just a thing,, i would really like to know also wich one is the better between 64 and fx51 and p4eee or anyother p4 ,, and with wich one, i will get better performance and maybe a better percentage of overclocking (taking the last configuration for each one) : i am more a personnal user than a professional one, but still i can "touch" with heavy programmes such as autocad or delphi or pinacle studio, photoshop, cubase, OR msn mIRC bittorent , and Games, so .....)

First off the FX51 is socket 940 so you cant use either of the motherboards with that cpu,

And the way its looking right now it seems that intel is back in the game... so if i was you i would wait for the 939 and see then wich is the topdog

Intel is back in the game.

Both set ups are gunna be hella costly. Either route you take, P4 EE, or FX-51. The P4 is a much more mature platform, so it might be the more 'safe' route to go.

Either way, both would be kick ass systems, so it pretty much comes down to who you like better, amd or intel.

Bonjour, and welcome to xtremesystems.org

1) Regarding the CPU, the FX-51 requires a socket 940 motherboard.

2) Regarding the motherboard, see point 1. The current (and probably future) VIA based motherboards for A64 suck because they do not handle the /7 and /8 dividers correctly. If you use a scoket 754 motherboard and plan on overclocking, choose an NF3 based board.

3) You'll need Registered DDR if you go with the FX-51. Use Corsair. If you use a Socket 754 motherboard you don't need registered DDR... in this case go for memory that uses Winbond BH5 chips.

4) Be careful with the SATA Raptors and any motherboard that does not lock the PCI divider (VIA A64 boards especially).

5) The question about which is better, FX-51 or P4 EE will be debated for a long time. The P4 EE has better motherboard / bios support but is at the end of it's life. The A64 / FX51 on the other hand is a totally new architecture but still needs some work on the motherboards/bios. Both are great.

6) Whatever you get, have fun and post the results back here!

Whaa guys, got to stay, ur excellent :)
thkx for the welcome ^^
for the problem of the socket, i totally forget it, sorry, so wich MB is good for FX51 proc ? Dajo, plz can you tell me a bit more about the 939 ? when is it coming down ? before xmas (:p) ? price, capabilities ? or nobody have enough informations to really tell maybe,,does it worth to wait fot it ?
Banana_Boy, that what i was tinking about, the "return" of the p4 :s return in " " cause i dont think they really left, anyway, when you say the p4 is more mature, do you suggest it more than the amd ? or do u insinuate that his capabilitis will be better than amd ? here is my choice, coz i got an amd right now, and i dont want to keep anypiec of it, or maybe on or two, because i want to keep it itself,,, so i will buy a totally new pc so i prefer it to be a very good one, u understand :D :D
shortcircuit, when u talk about the overcloking and the MB for it, what is the best one concerning 940 MB ?,, still NF3 ? (and that does not lock the PCI divider :D )
concerning the memory, i wanted a corsair or ocz so no problem for that
now, u r saying that the p4 ee is at the end and the fx51 is a new born so still with few probs,, thats a question, coz should i take one that have resolve many problems and has lived, or should i choose a new born, maybe more perfomant but that has some corrections to do :?

so what to do,,

I told you this was the best forum :D

Anyway i didn't had too much time talking with you on msn and i couldn't tell you about the various 64 sockets
The fx51 in this actual version is the nest but also the most expensive and without future. It uses expensive ECC ram but it'll soon be replaced by the new one which uses non ECC ram and 939 pins socket, so it'll be totally new mobo that you'll need.
The best bet for the moment is the regular A64 with nf3 mobo (i thought the abit mobo used the n3, i was mistaken sorry)
