A month ago you were talking to someone about 2 diff types of capictors 9800 pro's use. You or someone else said that silver ones overclock better and believe it or not its 100% true.
Vr-zone.com reviewed hercules 9800 pro that came with silver capacitors and they managed to hit 460mhz default without any artifacts. On the other hand i've had 2 hercules 9800 pro's and both came with black capacitors and they only did 412mhz without any artifacts. So anyone out there who's on the market for a 9800 pro i suggest you buy a brand that comes with silver rather then black because black really sucks. But now i ask myself why some come with black and others with silver. Does anyone know why??? And why does the silver ones give better oc results??? Ok here is an example of what im talking about.

Hmm what's the model on those..might be fairly simple to replace.
edit just read mine (silver) the tall ones that are aparently related to voltage regulation read
HC 81
470
10V
No indication of manufacturer AFAIK
btw This is on an ATI retail boxed 9800pro 128mb which does 458 no artifacts stock cooling and voltage so I guess it's a fairly decent card.

Hercules 9800 pro 128 megs.
No wonder why the majority of 9800 pro that hit like 550mhz and even 590mhz is build by sapphire which does come with silver ones. Here's a pic of sapphire: http://www.newegg.com/app/Showimage.asp?image=14-102-281-09.JPG/14-102-281-11.JPG/14-102-281-10.JPG/14-102-281-07.JPG/14-102-281-08.JPG

A kr7a or kx with the Nichicon caps was stable to a much higher FSB than the Rubycon-capped board.

Nice find, but my 9800 (non pro) with silver caps only does ~410mhz. Memory overclocks like mad so i'm not dissapionted. :)

I still say we should get some better caps and replace the ones on a R300/350/360.. some really low ESR ones and tanalums in parallel on the backside to assist.. 8-)

bump your 5v rail.
with my 5v @ 5.25-5.33 I can run my 9700 @ 430/343 without a hitch 24/7 and 1.75v on the core.
with stock 5v I cant get it to run 430 at even 2.0v....

My old hercules 9800 pro did 540 core (heavily vmodded) and 526 core (no vmods) with watercooling. And it had black caps.

hmm. Thats sounds interesting...
1. We could replace anything on card... Any idea of WHAT to replace on R9800Pro to get better OC and voltage stability?
2. buff. My R9800Pro did 525 and unstable 530 with waterchilling (+10C) and no mods, so shortcircuit's 526 is exceptional but not unbelievable.
3. As for voltage stability... I found that max stable voltage on my card is 1.93-1.95V. Even if i raise to 2.3V it still fall to 1.95 in some tests. I.e. 2.1-2.2 at Car Hi, but 1.93-1.99 in Nature. That's why maxed out at 545-550 core (when it was really cold i've got 560 for one bench but now 550 is max). That sucks... Any ideas??? Maybe to solder another caps on it? But what caps and where?
Aye, don't mention the 5V rail, it is 5.21V on TrueControl 550.
