Basically they want to make everyone have a gps transponder in their car so they can be tracked and taxed on miles driven. They need more money they say.

Well, who can blame them really. I have way to much cash anyway, and you know they would put the money to great use. Who needs money for unnecissary things such as vacations, food, shelter, education. We should all just work our asses off for mother Russia, oops, I mean mother U.S. (or in my situation, mother Canada... cuz you know they are right behind the US on the stupid ideas).

this is ridiculous, does anyone realize what they could do with a GPS chip in everyone's car that knows where all U.S. citizens drive.
the cost of implementing this tax would be ridiculous.

Whats funny is they state that they can't up the gas tax because of the economy now but it alright to create a new tax. Another thing is what will be the cost to put this system in use like the cost of the GPS,a way to record your millage, how this info is sent to the government (IRS). The cost will be massive.

Personally I prefer the Old Fashioned Way of using a MAP anyway and have no use for anything computerized in a Moving Vehicle.

They could just tell everyone that for being such good citizens we are all getting free gps units for our cars. Most people would stand in line for it.

It does reek of them telling us they're going to do something good, "we won't raise the gas tax during these tough times" but we will create a new tax. And then, they have the nerve to say that it could be graduated based on vehicle weight, so those driving heavier vehicles that do more damage to roads will pay more. Just like a gas tax works. Wow, genius !
But no politicians have the nerve to vote for a gas tax increase when people are afraid of the cost of gas. This thing won't actually go anywhere, and something WILL need to be done as more vehicles get on the road that don't use taxed motor fuel, but this isn't the solution.

Just use GLONASS. Should be nearly 100% up and running now.

Nice of them to not raise the tax on gas when a good chunk of the price of the gas IS TAX anyway. If you do the math on it its like 40-50% now with the prices low. Crazy.

The fact that they could achieve the same thing by raising the gas tax makes me think there's other (survellaince) motivations behind the idea. A bit of a tin foil hat reaction maybe, but I think there's a future for that type of apparel.

So a guy driving to and from work on the highway will pay more tax than a dude spending all day at a dragstrip?

P.S. Before some tough-guy comes and dissects my post word by word, I'm exaggerating to make a point.

riptide;3666559']Just use GLONASS. Should be nearly 100% up and running now.
So if the U.S. Government were to use GLONASS to track and tax the American people would the U.S. Government even be legally obligated to tell them. I mean they are not actually the government's satellites and they are not actually doing the tracking. It is a third party that is actually doing it so it is not wrong.

I don't want the government tracking me when I go to visit whor.. my girlfriend.
In all seriousness, chipping each vehicle, even if it's just new cars, would add a much greater cost than simply bumping up the taxes on gasoline. Then addressing the invasion of privacy.. yuck. I'm all for $4/gallon gasoline, even if it is 3/4 taxes and 1/4 cost. $4/gallon drives innovation while $2/gallon causes us to go back to our gas guzzling ways.

Brother Esau, you are exactly right. You can also add tracking chips to credit cards. They tell you it's to increase security. How a chip is going to make your cc more secure is beyond me.They say you enter a pin but don't sign.If you ask me that just makes it easier as there is no signature to compare. And if the pin number is the added security, then why is a chip needed? It's all about keeping tabs on your every movement.Sorry for the doom and gloom, but I don't like where this is headed at all.

You have to wonder if these people think these things through at all if they just shoot from the hip.
What kind of infrastructure would you need? You'd have to give everyone a gps unit first of all. They can't even afford to give people the digital converter boxes you need for the new broadcast standard - which was supposed to switch over this month. Now it's pushed to Juned.
Then you have to have some way of reading them - either than or put cell phone type transmitters in each one, which adds to the cost.
Then you have to figure that someone is going to figure out how to hack or disable them.
There's also the issue of 1 mile in NJ not being equal to 1 mile in WI. Everything I could possibly need is in a 10 mile radius. In WI, it's probably more like 100mile radius.
It's also another regressive tax. The less you make, the higher a percentage of your income it requires. The whole idea now is to get money to working people who need it - not put it in one pocket and take it out of the other.
*&^%ing morons. :shakes:

Clearly this is not going to see the light of day. Let's all get off our "OMG!!!" wagons and realize that. Next, let's find out who suggested it and have them removed from office, because they're clearly the wrong people for their job.
As far as "Do you know what else they could do?!?!?!?!" not a hell of a lot really. Know where your vehicle is, maybe give you speeding tickets. Unless you're afraid they could use the technology to better kidnap you in the middle of the night I'm not sure what it is you would be really afraid of. Frankly if they wanted to know where you are at all times they could do it much better by tracking your cell.
Oh, and those chips in credit cards do make thing much more secure, and a pin is more secure than a signature by way of the fact that if you get to the point the signature is required the crime has already been committed a good while ago. Pins stop it. Chips do allow for tracking - and they do have computers to track your purchases - but that's also how they know to disable your card when you're making a number of out-of-character purchases, or purchases from locations that are nowhere near where you live. You'd be surprised how many people this technology saves.
Like I said when Trade Center Blew Up.......................Implementation of The NEW WORLD ORDER............Conspiracy?..........I Think Not!

it sounds bad but it aint that big a deal. For example if you drive 15K miles a year, 15000 * 0.25c = $37.50 a year. If that will improve the infrastructure I am ok with it. Plus folks who drive the most use the "infrastructure", so it is kind of fair they pay more towards its maintenance and improvement.

don't be myopic. the slippery slope is the issue here with regard to both surveillance and taxation.

And you wonder why 9 states are proposing laws that declare null and void offenses such as this. If they want to track where I drive or submit where I've been inside of the USA, they're not going to last long.

Idiots..
Just about covers it.
No way they are going to be tracking where I am all the time. It is none of their business, an invasion of privacy pretty much. Not to mention the massive cost to try to implement it in the first place.

I'm pretty sure something like this isn't legal.... the implications on privacy violations would be massive.

Wouldn't a simple wiresnip fix it?
Or a Faraday cage over the transmitter (would that work?).
At worst....a hammer will take care of it
(and this would be horrible for those of us who do not obey the speedlimit....no need for cops, they have the eye in the sky observing you)

yes, I wish i had something constructive to say. Thsi is retarded. Catch the speeders and fine every teen caught texting while driving. BOOM! problem solved. No need for this ridiculous expenditure. Say...anyone got any info on what GPS they're using. Cos I'm gonna buy up that company's stock and then leave the country with the money:rofl:

But that's exactly what the gas tax does right now. If they need more money for roads raise the gas tax, this does nothing. It takes at least 2 steps back so that in 5-20 years once it's paid off they can finally take 1 step forward.

If you really want to start thinking like a conspiracy theorist, then what about all these cell phones that come stock with GPS? Maybe "they" are already starting to track us...
Dont blame me though, I voted for Ron Paul. ;)
Try paying 1,20€ for 1/5 of a galon and 75% of that gets into the government acount and all they say is:not enough;)
Don't worry it probably won't go foward and if it goes your government will massive lawsuits due to the constitutional right

All cell phones made for use in the U.S. are now required to include gps. It is just for 911 though.
