Hi guys,

I have got a defective HP 17" PVA-panel TFT sitting here on the shelf, because one of the following parts got smashed when something heavy fell on the frame.

Here are two pics of one of the good ones:

The defective one is smashed and looks to be made of silicon.

I can't really identify the part, although I'm quite good at this normally. I don't even have a clue as to the function of the part. Perhaps a filter of some kind, but I'm only guessing.

Thx in advance for any help.

Greetings from Bavaria!

Ingmar :)

P.S.: Please ignore the dust in the first pic. Was just too lazy to clean it off, at first. :D

Where is the part located,
Maybe a bigger overall picture ?

Edit

this looks like a connector of some sort

Yup I would say that too.. maybe one of those odd connections like you find in mobile phones that has a ribbon cable leading to the screen.

Hope it helps.

Take the "G" off the front of the # or put a space when you search.

the more i look at it the more it looks like an interconnect for an LCD

I'll take overview pics tomorrow and I'll maybe add one of the damaged part, to clear things up. ;)

OK, here are some new pics.

Will do a search for the controller. Maybe there is a schematic included which states the parts used. Who knows? ;)

Iam very doubutful you will be able to source apart for that
its probably not cost effective

Well, I inspected the connector, to which the smashed part belongs, again today and found that it's only bonded to the contact array of the panel itself through an adhesive film. It's fully removable and exchangeable by hand, without any problems. The only problem that still remains is: Where to get the replacement connector? :D I doubt that HP(or let's say Benq, the real producer) could help.

Edit: Just contacted a company nearby that salvages computer parts and that also has some HP L1755 (that's the monitor) in stock. I know that they usually have some spare ones for replacement parts (some with broken displays and such). Let's see if they can help. Did business with them some time ago and they are really nice.

That isnt a connector. That looks like an inductor if I had to guess. 99% chance the ribbon cable got borked when the part got damaged and you cant fix that. There are a few companies out there that do LCD repair, but I dont think even they replaced the mainboards on LCD's.

My suggestion, toss it in the trash and forget about it

it's a row/column lcd interface chip. it drives the actual rows and columns of the panel.

It is not a replacable part, it is bonded directly to the tape, which is bonded on both ends. You need a factory for the repair job.

yea it looks like an LCD interconnect...

When referring to the "connector", I'm not talking about the smashed blue part(interface chip, if cirthix is correct) alone, but about the flex connector that it is bonded to. There are 6 of these flex connectors to be exact and they are only making contact to the panel itself and the control-PCB by using a small adhesive film. That's why I said that they are easily removeable/replaceable. Anyway, the problem is solved nonetheless.

I decided to put this screen into the basement and wait until I maybe find the part(s) and time for a repair later on.
For now I ordered an Asus 15.6" TFT as a secondary screen. It's only 54,-EUR (about 70,-USD), brand new, and will suffice as media player screen etc.
The primary screen is and will be my Dell 2709W. I just needed a secondary one in case that I'd ever experience severe problems with the Dell and additionally to save some energy when only having media player etc. running.

Thx to all for the help. Sadly, I could not find a solution for the problem now, but we'll see if this changes over time. ;)

Little spontaneous update guys:

Had this HP L1755 lying around, doing nothing, for ~2 years now. Today I decided that I'd either finally throw it away or that I would think of a way to still be able to use.
Guess what, I had an idea. :hrhr:
What I did was to take the damaged flex-connector and remove it completely. Then I cleaned all parts and put this thing back together. Then, what happened was one expected and one unexpected thing. :hm:

The expected thing first:
The screen works, but with the columns that were connected to the control PCB via the damaged, and now removed, flex-connector staying black. So now a ~10cm broad stripe on the right stays permanently black.

The unexpected thing:
What I didn't realize until I tested the thing today is that the backlight is broken. Or lets rather say, a capacitor seems to have failed. It works for about 3-5 seconds when powering on the monitor. Afterwards it just goes out and the screen's dark with the picture slightly being vsible in the background.

The final idea now is to use the display in pivot mode after having fixed the backlight problem. Theoretically I should be able to use a smaller than native resolution with 1:1 pixel mapping and adjust the vertical picture position until no visible pixel is in the "dead" area.

I mean this monitor is sitting on the shelf for some time now, so why not finally try to make some use of it. Perhaps it'll work, then it's fine. If not, well, then at least I tried. The thing is that this monitor has a really good PVA-panel, so just throwing it away seems like a waste, at least as long as I haven't tried everything possible to save it.
