is this really nessicary? i personally never done this when installing a waterblock. but my watercooling exp. is rather limited (radeon 9700 pro, radeon 9800xt) so what do you say. should the shim go or stay?
And what are the benifits and nonbenifits.

iirc, the 9800's shim is slightl below the core, so you shouldn't need it.

been wondering about those shims my self, i guess if the core is slightly higher then the shim then there is no need to remove it.

imo it's actually a good design (if the core does infact sit higher than the shim. Keeps the pressure off the corners of the core so no cracking the damn corners off.!!! WOOT TO ATI!!!!!!!!!
Risk involved in removing it and no gain whatsoever in doing so make your choice quite obvious ;)

Is it really below the core??? That would be SOOOO good, then I don't even have to buy a new block :D

which waterblock are you using? I think some have been designed to fit INSIDE the shim...so you dont have to bother with removing it.
the MCW50 fits inside the shim

Got the same card man! A real beauty btw!
Mine goes all the way to 430Mhz core on Swiftech MCW50-T.
Could you give some more details on your shim removal action?
Cheers!

I just used a knife like the pic above. Made me really nervous though. Had to try a few times to get a corner to start. Once I got one corner going it came off with just slow gentle prying.

before I could only get my core up to 310. Now I can max the slider in rage 3d. I use the zalman plat edition cooler with a sf2 blowing down the legth and a standard 80mm blowing at the face. So far I have gotten upto 17400 in 3d01. I don't get a lot of time to fiddle with my system tweaking. That 17400 is oced but not tweaked for performance really.
