I have a P5Q Premium, and I'm looking to buy either the Xonar HDAV1.3 Deluxe, or the Essence STX. The only problem is that I don't think there is enough room behind the P5Q Premium's PCI-E 1x slot to accommodate one of those cards.

So my question is: could I put either of those sound cards into the long white or black PCI-E slots on the left of the motherboard?

Talk about horrible slot placement. Anyways--should work in one of the black PCI-E slots or the white even.

It won't do anything stupid - like make my GPU work at 8x or someting, will it?

not familiar with your board, but my bios has an option to manually specify the pci-e link widths for the x16 slots, maybe there's a similar option. in any case though, the board shouldn't have a problem detecting that its only a x1 card, and thus leave the other pci-e slot at full width.

You can put any PCI-E card in any PCI-E card slot as long as the card isn't longer than the slot. IE PCI-E 1x sounds card in a PCI-E 16x slot. You should not have to do any bios tweaking at all.

There was actually a test by THG(I think), where they took a video card and started masking off the slot connectors till it was running at 1x speeds to test bandwidth and stuff.
