I bought me a Zalman CNPS9700-NT and have mounted it onto my mobo (Asus P5E)
thing is I WANTED to mount it with the clip going vertically (from the top of the case to the bottom of the case, when its standing up) but this proved to be EXTREMELY difficult, and was scared of screwdriver slip...

I now have the clip going horizontally (in the direction of the airflow)

Was wondering if this will make a difference in the strength of the mounting. I move my PC around ALOT...like 2 to 3 times a month, so I'm worried about either this heavy cooler breaking the board or something.

anyway, what im getting at is....is it OK to mount the fan in this way or should I rather think about mounting it the other way (and fight a little more)

theres a lil flash instruction vid on this site that shows you the 2 ways of mounting it.

the heatpipes are designed to work in either orientation. i even read something from Zalman a while ago that specifically said the difference between mounting the cooler horizontally or vertically is negligible. mounting the cooler blowing up should run it a couple-few degrees cooler, but it doesn't matter all that much. either way will work fine.

I use this coooler, I do not think you need worry if you used the included mounting hardware with the backplate. I have 4 kids 7 and under..my computer get kicked, run into, toys thrown at it, knocked over...never had any issues breaking anything. In the past, with chips that did not have an IHS, I'd be concerned, but not now, with todays parts.

thanks for that cadaveca

xMrBunglex: I'm not talking about the fan mounting...Im talking about the actual clip itself

NO problem ,jsut don't drop the pc a couple of feet...anything that might jar a vga card loose is gonna do something, but with the backplate, the board is very tight to the mobo tray, it wouldn't even be able to flex without pushing the case out...and the plastic of the mount seems pretty good...screws go into nuts on the bottom of the cooler, so they are pretty reliable...that said, if you are using the clip-on mount, just use a bit of coution when moving the box...but tossing on the backseat of my car and driving madly around town isn't something I worry about...

I got a intel Core 2 Quad, so using the intel mounting (with the bracket that goes on the back of the mobo

if you take a look at this link
http://www.quietpcusa.com/Zalman-CNPS9700-NT-Ultra-Quiet-CPU-Cooler--P131C35.aspx

click on socket 775 on the flash video at the bottom of the page, the first way they show the mounting clip, I mounted y fan that way, but wondering if it isnt better to mount it the other way (the second way they show for the socket 775)

Should make no difference in performance since pressure is centralized on cooler either way, just an option for motherboard compatibility issues.

i had mine mounted both ways before and it didnt feal like it was going to break IMO and u can cross mount it with both mounting brackets but u need one that goes vertical

so you suggest I remount the click to going Vertical zanzabar?

yes, thats the only stable way and u may need longer screws aswell. its a poorly designed retention bracket

Makes no difference with temperatures or stability the same mounting pressure is applied either way.

I agree. I stripped my screws since they are cheap phillips head screws. It is hard to get it balanced in there and screw it down.
