ive been wondering why my new phenom has been running hotter than the rest of my cpus in my loop, 1 loop 4 cpus. the others are running at a nice cool 15c, and my phenom in a hot 40c.
well i upgraded to a q9400 and pulled the water block off the phenom, and look what i see... just a small area down the center of the IHS where contact has been made by the block. i redid the AC5 and reset the block on it, and im looking at the sides. there is still no contact.

it looks like a line maybe 1/2 of an inch down the middle of the IHS where contact is being made.

so my question is, how do you smooth out the IHS on the cpu?

whats the best way to do it.

what sort of problems can occur if i dont lap it properly?

and any thing else i forgot to think of.

thanks for the help.

Lapping Tutorial (http://www.theraptorpit.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=1549).

Basically, the only way to not lap it properly is to go too fast. That will likely mean you applied pressure, which can result in an uneven IHS and put you either back to or worse than when you started. Let the CPU's weight and the grit of the sandpaper do the work for you. Start with low grit to do the heavy-duty work and work your way to high grit for a nice, smooth, shiny finish.

great guide, thanks. before i started i really did not want to void the warrenty on the cpu, so i got a razor blade, and checked the block and cpu, guess what it was the block that was not flat :) the cpu is close enough for me. but the block is getting done as we speak, thanks for the info
