Notice anything wrong when you put these particular components together?
GIGABYTE GA-MA790GP-DS4H (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128352) + OCZ Reaper HPC 4GB (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227289) + XIGMATEK Dark Knight (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835233024) = DOH!
I didn't think it would be a problem until I thought a little more about it. :shakes:
First of all... will the north bridge cooler get in the way of the fins. Second, since the RAM is going to block the fan in a blow configuration, will the North Bridge cooler get in the way of a blow configuration? I don't have the measurements of that NB cooler... and I have no way to obtain them. :( Anyone think it will get in the way of a suck configuration? Can this CPU cooler even be turned around?
Thankfully, nothing has been ordered yet.

why exactly do you think there should be an issue? it seems to me via observation that the dark night fins will clear that NB cooler easily....

Oh good. I haven't really built anything in 4 years... so you know, I can't tell just by looking at a picture. I'm out of practice. :(

The heatsink can't mount vertically (airflow to the rear of the case) because of the design of the sink mounting mechanism and the typical AMD socket. I really wish they would rotate the socket 90 degrees so coolers like that could mount vertically but it is going to have to be horizontal (blowing up or down). It might block the first two ram slots, depending on exactly how tall the reapers are.

I already ordered it!!! AHHH!!! What do I do if it doesn't fit!?

thats the beauty of newegg you can send it right back to them, I am sorry to have given bad advice like that, I forgot about the difference in AMD/Intel mounting.
when you know how much the shipping of the heatsink back to newegg is shoot me a PM with a confirmation of RMA, I will compensate you the cost.

you may need to run the ram in the 2nd and 4th slots cause the heatsink may hang over the 1st slot. if your lucky, the heatpipe thing on the reapers will be able to move and you can shift it to the side and everything will mount fine.

I hope you're right! Everyone cross your fingers....
And its okay you gave me bad advice. :) I forgive.

If I open it and use it then find out it doesn't fit... can I still send it back... or will they take it back open box? I mean I see open box stuff for sale all the time, but I don't understand what the circumstances are that would allow that.
After looking for what you're talking about... now I understand why it mounts laterally instead of vertically. I didn't know that until know. But judging from the fact that the width of the fins sticking out on both sides is each about equal do the width of the heat sink that mounts on top of the CPU... it looks like its going to completely cover the first two ram slots. :( Normally... I wouldn't really care because I don't have any intention of using more than two slots even if I upgrade the RAM, but the motherboard manufacturer states that if you're using only 2 sticks, then they should go into the two that the fins are going to block. Oops... well... unless they're high enough to go over the main part of the ram. If thats the case then maybe I can bend the heat pipe like you said. If its high enough to clear the ram but I can't bend the head pipe, then I can keep the ram and give them to my dad and just get a couple of different sticks without heat pipes.
*ugh* Does anyone remember that idiot thing I did with my first rig in XS? I bought an XP-120, and the very tips of the heat pipes where pushing hard against the ram. So I stupidly tried to grind them down just a little. Ended up ruining most of them and the block was ruined. :(
In short... I seem to have really sh*t luck with coolers. :(
Hmmm... I wonder if you can turn a heat pipe cooler into a water cooler by converting the the heat pipes to water pipes if you have some metal working skills. I always wondered if thats possible. hehe

Actually, the manual "recommends" that they go first into Channel 0 (DDR2_1 and DDR2_2 slots), but the memory configuration chart just above that recommendation plainly shows that two sticks of memory will habitate in Channel 1 very well....(slots DDR2_3 and DDR2_4).....and I'd be willing to wager you'd really see no difference in performance doing that.

*cheers*
.......2x4g dual channel IS better than 2x 2x2g dual channel right?
And what about returning an open box? I need to open it to find out if it fits or not... is NewEgg good about taking back open box items?
