View Full Version : So I got a vapochill LS: trying to use on my i7-920

I picked up a Vapochill LS to try out on my i7-920 setup. I've never done anything like this, but I figured I would give it a try. The mounting hardware that come with the LS is for a socket 939 setup. So I had a few concerns. First, would this thing be able to remove heat fast enough to maintain a subzero temperature on an i7? Does the i7 generate more heat than the Vapochill LS is designed to remove? Also, how am I going to mount this thing?
well first I figured that I would have to get it mounted. Upon a closer inspection, I decided to check out my OEM CPU cooler for the i7-920. I unsnapped the aluminum and copper part from the plastic and then snapped off the fan. It seems to fit perfect other than the fact I will need about a 1mm shim. Here are a couple of pics:

Now I need to prepare the motherboard and CPU to prevent condensation from damaging anything. I don't have the material with me right now, so I will have to mess with it some other time.
Any advice or criticism is much welcome.

Im suprised you got it to fit properly, if you did.
And yes you do need to insulate the area.
Read the sticky,s here.
A stock LS is a little light for i7 almost at stock.
I hear they run hot.

If you have troubles get one of the builders on here to mod it for you a stock vapo with an I7 could be pushing it but it depends what clocks your using

Look around for some pictures on how everyone uses that art eraser for insulation, it really does work great. Then cut a layer of shop towel and another layer of foam and your good. Thats how I do it anyway.

Thats just how I did it for this test. I didn't have a full sheet of foam so I just used that piece, it works great tho.
Make sure you have that hold down rig nice and tight. I am not sure how firm all that is in your pictures. I assume it uses just those screw down things that come with a stock HS.
Good Luck !

Well I not a phase guy, but i would take off those stock intel push pins & go the the hardware store & get some threaded rod & nuts to make sure you get a good SOLID mount.

What I'm looking at doing right now is using my bottom bracket for the TRUE along with some bolts from the hardware store instead of the plastic clips. I'm confident I can get it mounted well, even if I have to fabricate a bracket, but the main thing I'm worried about is the ability of the LS to remove heat from the i7 processor. If worse comes to worse I can modify the LS to be able to remove more power.

????
What compressor does the LS use and can you post a pict of the condenser?
Just curios...

I always forget between the LS and the Mach II GT but I think the LS used an NF7FX while the GT used an NF11FX? The compressor is easily up to the task but the capillary line is too restrictive and you'll need more airflow through the condenser but other than that it'll work fine. For right now though you're probably better off using a nice air heatsink as the Core i7 920 will do 4GHz on air with a modest board but could possibly overload the VapoLS at that frequency/voltage.

Man my LS is in storage or i would post pics of what it has.
Plus im stuck home today cause of ice, sleet and snow.

so I used the bolts that come with my TRUE to bolt down the plastic bracket instead of the plastic clips that Intel uses.
